OCTOBER: usa family health month
During Family Health Month, the American Academy of Family Physicians urges everyone to take a closer look at their health. Sometimes we get caught up trying to balance school, work and family time, and Family Health Month is the perfect opportunity to come together and make sure everyone is focused on taking care of themselves, and each other.
Sticking to a healthy diet, reducing stress and staying active are all great ways to keep your family feeling good.
maintain a healthy diet
Make sure you and your kids are eating enough of the right foods.
Fruits, vegetables and hearty doses of protein give everyone in your family the energy they need to go strong all day long. And don't forget about a healthy breakfast. Never skip the most important meal of the day, and be sure to make it worth your while by eating right.
Organic yogurts, or single serve flavored milks are great sources of calcium and are the perfect supplement to a healthy bowl of cereal or quick piece of toast when you're in a hurry
CuT the stress
Too much stress can wreak havoc on your body and your mind. Obviously stressful situations pop up from time to time, but letting stress control your behavior is a dangerous practice. Here are some tips to help you relax:
- Put some flowers on your desk at work and enjoy a fragrant burst of colour in the office everyday.
- Take a break and go outside. The fresh air can help you relax and take your mind off work for a minute.
- If you notice yourself feeeling tense, take a minute to breathe deep and focus on some fun things in your life like playing in the yard with your kids.
- Wear comfy and loose clothing when possible and kick off your shoes every once in a while.
sTay in shape
Regular exercise helps generate energy keeping you awake and alert during the day. It can also be a fun way to get the whole family together. Organize a flag football game with the neighbors, or simply take the kids on a walk and enjoy the fall colors.
Help your family make a commitment today to staying healthy together, and enjoy life to its fullest.
