Task: Big Brother University
 Wednesday 02 August
Day 77, 09:30

The housemates have been signed up for an exclusive study for food program... they'll spend the next two days taking university degrees in order to pass the shopping task.

The group are set for a shock when they awake this morning, with the House kitted out as a university campus. There are study desks, chairs and biology aids. But it's not all work, work, work - there's also a pool table in the middle of the living area.

Each housemate will become a student and take one of the degree subjects on offer; namely Languages, Communication Studies, English Literature, Drama and Anatomy.

Each student has been provided with a rucksack containing a textbook and instructions for their degree. They must study in pairs for their degree but will be tested individually tomorrow. To pass the task six out of the eight students must successfully pass their degree.

It should be easy for the likes of Richard (who knows everything) and Jennie, who reportedly has 8 'A Levels. But the revision schedule might be a struggle for academically challenged Pete (just one GCSE and proud of it) and Susie (recently adjudged least intelligent housemate).

As usual, the prize for success is a luxury food budget. But the price of failure is basic rations for the next week.

Chick pea week, anyone

 Wednesday 02 August
Day 77, 11:00

The housemates are busy adapting to student life after being each allocated a degree subject. In other words, they're playing pool.

The table and skeletons were a pleasant surprise when they awoke, but their university clobber received a mixed reaction.

Richard hated his sensible trousers, moaning: "My father wears these," as he squeezed into them. But his mood lightened as he wondered: "Do you think I'll get to meet the university football team?

Aisleyne loved her skirt and official Big Brother University top and sweater, crowing: "I feel really clever." But the real cleverness tests began when the students chose their subjects from random envelopes in the Diary Room.

Aisleyne and Glyn picked Communication Studies, which will involve learning 30 words and phrases in sign language. The London girl was very pleased, revealing: "I already know the alphabet, it's good innit."

Imogen and Mikey's strained relations will be strained a bit more when they are forced to study Anatomy together. They need to learn the names of 20 bones and muscles.

"I'll have to learn full-on long words," fretted Imogen.

Pete looked pleased as punch to pick English Literature and Drama, which he will study with Jennie as the pair memorise a scene from Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream. "I am an actor," he beamed importantly, stroking his chin.

Mature students Richard and Susie were allocated Languages, but there's no chance for the well-travelled pair to brush up on their French or Italian conversational skills. Instead, they'll be studying the eminently useful Welsh.

At least they'll be able to earwig Glyn and Imogen's conversations...

Wednesday 02 August
Day 77, 12:03

So, the housemates have been given an important exam and a pool table. Guess which they're choosing to spend their time on...

It's no contest, really. Or, should we say, it's a series of contests. Winner stays on. Two shots for a foul. Doubles on the black not required... Since receiving their degree subjects, all the housemates have done is pot balls

Jennie has proved something of a hustler, effortlessly beating Imogen, Aisleyne and Glyn. There we were thinking girls couldn't play pool... .

Mikey's also been spending a lot of time at the table and even providing commentary: "He's going to attempt a long range effort, the pressure's on if he misses... and he does it!"

Those who aren't playing are sitting around watching; the only thing missing is a little stack of pound coins on the side.

Meanwhile, textbooks languish in rucksacks, as yet unopened.

"I know all the bones anyway, it should be alright," remarked Mikey as he nonchalantly stroked a yellow into the corner pocket.

Let's hope so, they've got an exam tomorrow...
