Important Message from Community Feedback -- Please Read!!
What in the world is going on with MSN now?

Some of you may have noticed this post by one of our members,

We've done some further investigating and corresponding with MSN asking specifically whether or not the letter in Message 12  with the ID# SRX10815898101D is true.  This is what we received in response:
----------------------------------------------------------

RE: SRX1081670277ID - MSN Groups:Manage Group

Hello ****,

Thank you for writing to MSN Groups Technical Support.   My name is Geri and I understand that you are inquiring about Group migration to Multiply.com.  I will try to address your questions to the best of my ability.  I realize how important MSN Groups is to you and I appreciate that you've written to us regarding your concerns.

Change is coming

As you may have noticed we've made considerable investments across MSN and Windows Live to enhance your product experience while aligning our online services brands. Can you give me specifics?

For now, unfortunately, I cannot give specifics about the new products and updates we have in the works. We will however be communicating updates in the near future so definitely be on the look-out for those.

Any important announcements from Microsoft about MSN Groups will be posted at the MSN Groups homepage (http://groups.msn.com).  In the near future, we hope to provide you with more information and establish communication channels through which you can provide feedback.

We appreciate your continued support as we strive to provide you with the highest quality service available. Thank you for using MSN Groups.

Geri

What we *do* know is that change is coming.  Windows Live Groups are being launched with Wave 3 under the Windows Live umbrella with a yet unconfirmed launch date of mid-November.  Whether or not existing groups are being migrated to another site in the same manner that adult groups were moved remains to be seen (not confirmed as of yet, but watch this thread).

I think this will verify the story from CF

Confirmed: Microsoft Gives Up On MSN Groups, Hands It Off To Multiply

Jason Kincaid
TechCrunch.com
Wednesday, October 15, 2008; 3:59 PM

We've received confirmation that Microsoft is handing over the reins to its MSN Groups property to the social network Multiply. Microsoft is planning to release a new service called Windows Live Groups in November, and apparently doesn't want to compete with itself. Oddly enough, Microsoft has chosen not to allow groups to transition between the two services, and instead is going to offer a migration tool that will allow users to take groups over to Multiply, which currently bills itself as the world's 8th largest social network.

The rumor was originally reported earlier today after a series of emails were posted to a MSN Discussion newsgroup, and has since been confirmed by both Multiply and Microsoft through a blog post.

Here's Microsoft's explanation for the shutdown:

The natural question to ask in this situation is why we are closing MSN Groups. It is our goal to provide our customers with the most current and user friendly technology available today. We made the difficult decision to close the MSN Groups service as part of an overall investment in updating and re-aligning our online services with Windows Live. In the long term we believe that closing the service is the best way to continue to offer innovative, best of breed services that help you stay in touch with the people you care about. It?s very important to us that you keep the data you created using MSN Groups and that is why we have partnered with Multiply, so you can keep your group going into the future despite the closure of MSN Groups.

The Microsoft post also states that users will have until February 21, 2009 to migrate their groups over to Multiply, after which point the site will cease to exist.

This just seems weird - why would Microsoft abandon a sizable (but dwindling) chunk of users to an entirely unrelated social network? It's nice that they aren't leaving their users out in the cold, but why not just cut off new signups to MSN Groups and allow the legacy users to continue on in peace? Microsoft may appear to have made the gesture in good faith, but it's likely that the company is hoping users will scoff at the idea of having to migrate, and just sign up on the new Live service when it launches.

Whatever Microsoft's intentions, Multiply is sure to be happy with the deal, as it has just been handed millions of new users (we're trying to contact Microsoft for the exact number).

Thank you for writing to MSN Groups Technical Support. This is regarding your inquiry if MSN will be moving MSN Groups. I realize the importance of this matter to you.

Kimberly, it is true that we are planning to close the MSN Groups service on February 21, 2009 and will offer you the opportunity to move your Group to our new partner service, Multiply.  We want you to be able to keep your Group together, so we partnered with Multiply to create a migration process that moves your Group to their service to preserve your online community and its history.

The migration method that Multiply has built for you will be ready next week.  Once the service is ready we'll send all of our users an email and will post notices within the MSN Groups site with more information, including instructions for beginning the migration process.  In the meantime you can visit http://Multiply.com to get to know the service and see some of the thousands of groups they host already.

Many users are asking why we are closing MSN Groups.  We want to provide our customers with the most current and user friendly technology available today and we made the difficult decision to close the MSN Groups service as part of our overall investment in updating and re-aligning our online services with Windows Live. In the long term we believe that closing the service is the best way to continue to offer innovative, best of breed services that help you stay in touch with the people you care about.  It's very important to us that you still have access to your Group and its data and that is why we have partnered with Multiply, so you can keep your Group going into the future despite the closure of MSN Groups.

Between today and February 21, 2009 nothing will change about the MSN Groups service except that we will remove the option to add more storage to your group. Other features will remain until the service is shut down and you can use it the same way you do today until the date of closure.  Watch the site and your email inbox over the next week as we will post updated information there, including a more detailed outline of your options and next steps.

We appreciate your continued support as we strive to provide you with the highest quality service available. Thank you for using MSN Groups.

Sincerely,

Dot

message from a managers group.

Please do NOT move your groups over to Multiply!! Don't go to their site and put in your email and password!! You don't want to share that information with anyone!! We need to wait for word from MSN!! If MSN gets ready for us to move they will let us know!! Please do consider backing up your groups on another site, everyone needs to do this anyway. But let's not rush into anything. MSN will let us know b4 they close groups . I can't stress enough, DO NOT put your email addy and password into that site!! If you already have, change your password immedately!! I will let you know when I get more info from MSN until then the only thing you need to do is create a group on a diffrent server. There are other places that have groups such as yahoo, google, world groups, yuku etc. Have your members join there so you can keep in touch with them should you loose your group for any reason. If MSN wants us to move our groups they will let us know, PLEASE wait for word from them!!

Oddly enough I came to see if you had more news than the coppy I was going to post ,
the Groups Managers mention. Well World groups that is where MSN sendt all those iffy groups,  Maybe Blod can remember where Silver Threads had a chat room.  Not sure many have comms. at least you do have time to look around. without a comms your group would be just an open room in SPCN.
Good Luck   Why does MSN have to mess around.

Namagers group says do not put our emails into Multply I wonder why , whebn MSN closed they sent all the "Adult ": groups to World Groups remember that uis when we got Creations.  I have heard it said that World Groups is owned by MSN, Have nothing to back that up with.
I did the usual Google search there are many groups but they all to me seem to have a drawback  Like World Groups , you must submit your CC number.  just in case you wander into the dark side.
Penny I am going to stop looking you know what we need better than anyone except Puppy.   If you want URLs posted or sent to you I will do so wilingly.

Well I am not really surprised at anything MSN does.
Rmember the technology is moving to web based studff very fast and Microsoft are in danger of being left behind. Their windows monopoly will be fast coming to an end.
For years they have monopolised the "rails" (Operating sytem, upon which the "trains and trucks" (software) have run and now things are changing.
We will be able to access the web in the future without being tied to one operating system.
I will try and find some links to read so we may all can have some understanding of this.
MSN techs are the best in the world for writing a long helpful sounding email repley which actually teels us nuffink!
But we all n know.. we shall not be allowed to be cast into the ether.
Our leaders are clever dedicated people. So..watch and wait.. and

DONT PANIC!

I read on another group that World Group have two distiinct group s Adult which can cobver anything . and a "Mature" group which I read is very like chat but a Comms ws not mentions.   The asking for credit card is to make sure you are a person , Peny's did not ask for card , others ask you to verify your email that should be enough. One thing in their favour is the do not ask for your security code # .
SILKS,
I know Puppy and Penny will nit takeus wherewe should not be.
Take care.

Rowan a lot of the PSP groups are moving to Forums.
I belong to a couple of Forums and I hate them.
I am hoping there is something around with a similar format to the present MSN groups.
No need to panic yet as we have until February to find something.
