Most of the UK was busy enjoy bonfire parties at 6 p.m. on Saturday 4th November…..but just at that time, in the peace and quiet of Marwell, a baby decided to make his appearance.

A male babygiraffe made his appearance - taking a tumble onto a thick bed of straw. The Park was closed at the time but keepers were around to make sure everything went smoothly. However, giraffe births usually happen without any problem and on this occasion, once again all went well.

His mother is Matilda who is nearly ten years old and his father is Christopher who is nearly sixteen. The baby is Matilda’s fourth calf and she was also born at Marwell Zoo. Giraffes are pregnant for over 15 months.

The calf is now the youngest member of Marwell’s herd of eleven and he will certainly be joined by some baby brothers or sisters in the near future.

He will grow up to be one of the world’s tallest land animals so while he was just over six feet at birth – he’s going to zoom up in the coming months and reach the dizzying heights of his Dad – some eighteen feet. To set him on the way, he’s enjoying milk from his mum until moving on to solid food after about a month.
