           The long journey home
"Do you think you could do me a
favour," the boss had asked.
"Depends," I had replied. "Old Alfs
had an accident and smashed his
bike, could you run him home?"
"Yes ok," I replied. "No problem,
tell him to wait by the car."
Now Alf was a nice enough bloke
given to be a bit grouchy at times
but when you got to know him he
wasn't such a bad old stick. There
was only one problem tho' he did
pen and ink  at times. It wasn't that
he was dirty but he lived in a damp
caravan and it was a mixture of
smells on his clothes.
As it was we were in the middle of
summer and it was a boiling hot.The
car had been shut all day and the
heat almost exploded in my face as I
opened the door.
Once I'd seated Alf I  wound all
windows down, not only to let the
air in, but the car by now was
absolutely reeking.
It was one of those evenings when
every traffic light was against me
and long queues were forming on
every  congested round about. How
I made that journey without
throwing up I still don't know. After
what seemed like hours  I eventualy
arrived at his caravan site. I said
goodnight to him and was thankful
when he had at last got out.
I grabbed the aerosol can and
sprayed it with force, but it made it
smell even worse as it often does.
I couldn't get home quick enough.
Once home I flung the doors wide,
opened the hatch back right up and
was about to go in doors when I
remembered I'd needed something
from the boot
As I was  rummaging for what ever
it was (I cant remember now) my
hand came to rest on a small plastic
bag that had something very warm
and squidgy inside. Opening the bag
I was aghast! It was a bit of smoked
haddock that I'd bought the week
before. It must have fallen from my
shopping bag I'd completely
forgotten about. No wonder there
was a stink it had been cooking in
the car all day. I felt so guilty at
blaming poor old Alf. But if I
thought it was him, he must have
thought it was me! He didn't say
anything and me I kept quiet too.
