Following a review of this particular tool in a computer magazine (Silky will have seen this as well I suspect) I decided to try out McAfee's Site Advisor add-on.
 
When you download it and have it running it adds itself onto your browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox). As you surf the web it lets you know whether the site you are visiting is "safe","unknown" or "risky". They use a number of criteria to rate a site and you can get details of those results in a pop-up screen if you wish (it includes whether any downloads on the site are dodgy, whether you encounter more spam after filling in your email address on site and whether it links to other good or risky sites).
 
Also, if you do a google search it can colour code the search results to indicate which sites are "safe", "unknown" or "risky". It works like traffic lights in that it uses Green, Yellow and Red to indicate whether a site is safe or not.
