Not at all essential but fun, webcams allow people across the whole world to view little old you sitting at your desk, sipping your tea (or whatever else you're doing!). They can also be used to display various geographical views, for example skiing conditions in the French Alps or a bird's eye view of tourists in London's Leicester Square (however this sort of use tends to be pretty dull as often not much happens in the scene to keep a viewers interest).
