This site list numerous file extensions - the little 3 letter code after the dot.
If you see an unrecognised file type this site could enable you to identify it and find out if it is good or bad.
I used this site last week to find out what a .PIF file was and once I read this site I realised that a virus was trying to spread itself to me via Messenger.
Yes - this site doesn't need you to download anything to your PC in order to scan it to check that you are virus free. By running it from online you can be guaranteed that you are up to date whereas your own virus scanning software may not have an up to date list of virus definitions. If a virus has infected you and managed to disable your virus scanner or fool it into thinking it is clean this online scanner will still be able to find it and remove it.
Penny found this site to be invaluable after last week's panic in here one night.
One word of caution though - I tried running this from within Firefox as my browser and it crashed the browser because a certain plug-in wasn't installed. That's just my bad luck though - for those of you using IE as your browser this site should be invaluable.
This software needs to be downloaded but is free for personal use. This scans your pc for any sort of spyware/adware or similar unwanted stuff. It can delete these files and basically make your PC a much healthier PC again. After running this you may notice speedier internet access and speedier computer use in general - which will just go to prove how much of this stuff runs in the background and slows you down.
Don't even try getting online without a firewall installed. Basically this should be your first line of defence against any predators on the Internet. It basically watches your connection with the Internet and lists any programs that try to access the Internet. If you recognise them and know what they are you can allow them either temporarily or permanently to access the internet. If the program is suspect you can block it from accessing the Net. It can also be used as a "cloaking device" and block your PC from being visible to anything scanning the net for vulnerable connections. The multitude of options make it easy to be specific whilst still being user-friendly - and best of all it's free for personal use.
Useful for downloading utilities. Easy to identify free software compared to time or feature limited trial downloads. Lots of categories to browse for useful utilities. Products rated by users so you can see how many users have given it a good rating.
Some of the aforementioned utilities can also be downloaded from this site.
This is a great tool if you download a lot of files. It can split apart the files and download separate chunks at a time which can help to speed things up. It also has a resume feature so if you get part way thru downloading a large file and your connection fails or your time limit is up (for those on dial-up connections), you can easily resume the download when next online. It can be integrated with your browser so that if you choose to download a file from the internet, this software automatically kicks in and starts downloading it.
It has a free version as well as a paid-for Pro version.
Just like Stardownloader this utility also enables you to resume downloads and to break the files apart to speed them up. One big plus for this utility is the facility to grab multiple files from a webpage. It adds an option to the right-click menu "FlashGetAll" - when you select this option you can then specify which of all the links on that page you want to download the files for - it is very easy to get it to select all GIFs or all JPGs on a page for instance. This makes it a doddle to download multiple files from a site (PSP tubes for instance) - just specify the files and then leave it to download them. For those on dial-up as well (as I have found) you can even force it to resume your connection after you get cut off and it then carries on downloading. Last month when I was trying to stock up on PSP tubes I quite happily left it running overnight to download about 1500 files - it took some time because I don't have broadband but at least it resumed after the normal 2hr cut off point.
This program is also free and enables you to view pictures in any of the different formats that can be found. It also enables you to do some basic editing and touching up of the photos. If PSP is too expensive then this free alternative should enable anyone to play around with their digital photos etc.
This is another free download and is backed by Google. As well as some editing features, this also enables you to easily keep track of the photos or other picture files you have on your PC and enables you to back them up easily or to print them out etc. It also makes it simple to email them or share them online etc. If you've got loads of pictures around on your PC (and I know I have.....lol), then this software is ideal if you want a freebie.
