A tip reposted by Ken..
if your pc wont fire up or has gone back in time basically..(you may have to try to restore in safe mode..)

The problems you are having are more thn likely due to you battery on the motherboard running down.  As a result, you have lost your BIOS settings. (these are the setting and screens you see when you first sign in).  What you need to do is to replace the battery on the motherboard, and then hit the (delete) button the moment you start up.  Please note, this could be F2 on some computers depending on which motherboard you have.  If you have a book on your motherboard, use the basic settings listed in the book, or look and see if you can set your date to the correct date, and enusre that the C:drive is set to Auto.  after that, check the list and select (Load best settings).  This should get you up and running again.  The time and other info is on the first screen you see.  Go along the top of the page and select each sub section in turn and load the best settings.  Check and see if you see something calles S.M.A.R.T. if you have that always select it by using the cursor buttons on the key pad to the 'ON' position. after all pages are done, select F10, and save the settings.....it will automatically boot out and then boot up....this may cure you problem, but please first change the nic/cad battery on the motherboard before you switch on agaon.  it is a small flat batter (possibly with a number like 2205 or something similar), always replace with an identicl battery.   The normal battery life is about 3 years or so dependent on use.
