I have lost a cat.  To a predator (hawk or owl) i believe.  It is very painful to discuss and think about and i am very ashamed and disgusted with myself.  He was just 2.  He was one of those creatures that so loved the wildness that to keep him from going out crushed his spirit.   Some you cannot save.  But you can try and i losing them your pain and guilt become unbearable.

ballet, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss.  I always worried about my friend's cat being hit by a car or taken.  When they moved the kitty decided being inside wasn't so bad after all.

Sending cuddles your way.  It is so difficult.  You are a good kitty mommy, sometimes things happen.

Darling sister Balletcat,  please do not beat yourself up. Your
precious baby died living the way he loved - a free spirit.  He might have lived many years longer cooped up but for him that would have been existing, not living.  I honor your true love for him which you showed by respecting his choices.  I am sending you a big, warm cuddle pile.

Would he have been happy as an inside cat?  Or did you allow him to live the life he wanted to live?  You can not be at fault for loving your animals enough to let them be who they are, and I am sure if he could tell you that he would.

As I look at that picture I can see the feelings he had for you, he would not want you to blame yourself.  As someone who loves animals as you do and you take care of everyone you can I know that you would not have hurt him for the world.  Please I know you will be sad about losing him but do not beat yourself up for something that you could not have helped. He had a very happy life while with you, most likely a lot happier than he would have without you.

He knows you loved him and he is now with all your other furrbabies you have loved and cared for through your life.

Holly

Balletcat, I agree with everyone here. You should not be ashamed and beat yourself up over what happened. You were giving him the best and loving him the most. You allowed him to be free and enjoy his life in the wilderness. To have kept him inside would have kept him alive, but would he be happy? That is the important thing.  And now he's happy at the bridge playing with all of his new friends, including my Piu, who died in January.  I know it's hard now, but when you go outside, breathe deep, and feel his presence around you, and enjoy the memories you had with him. And know you made him happy. Many hugs to you!

Oh sweetie, sometimes you just have to let them be themselves.  He may have been happier having the outdoors life he craved.  A great big pile of cuddle for you.  You are a great mommy to your furries and it was not your fault.  I myself have been there and share your grief.  Many condolensces....

Yo Ballet:

What can be said for comfort?  I am sorry.  He was loved and that is more than a lot of kitties get, even for 2 years.

He apparently was an adventurer and loved his life that way.

Please be kind to yourself.  He wouldn't want it any other way.

Balletcat.....I know this has been said, but don't beat yourself up.  You gave your baby a good home and you can't blame yourself for the outcome.  I have lost a cat or two that way also.  No matter how much we try to protect them, there is always a chance we can't protect them completely.

Bless you and bless your little one.

That is the way i look at it - Life is not measured in length but in richness.  Life is hard and full of hurt and sadness, but also so much Joy and and Freedom ...
and of course Mischief!
I miss him terribly because he had such personality, was hugely loving when the time was right.  I cannot eat a banana and strawberry smoothie now because he is not them reaching up my leg with his soft paws asking for his share.
