My two female rats have passed away....Kitty developed a tumor that I couldn't afford to get removed...and Mary passed a day later of unknown causes...She wasn't sick and was active (she escaped from her cage two times after Kitty passed)...Maybe she was more attached to Kitty that I thought...They will be missed....I am currently rat-less...and not planning on getting anymore until I find steady work...

Many cuddles, Ratties      I'm sure Kitty and Mary are frolocking across the rainbow bridge - no more cages for them.
I'm sure you'll miss them.

Aw ratties, that's terrible! I'm so sorry. Poor babies! I guess Mary needed to be with Kitty.  Well, they are both healthy and playing together again at the bridge. Hugs!

I am so very sorry.  I know that although you are rat-less for the moment, Kitty and Mary live in your heart.

I'm really concerned now...not only did Mary die without known cause but something is happening to my rodents...I have, well had 7 degus...5 males (Damian, Dominick, Dusty, Derek and Durk) and 2 females (Delilah and Dinah)...Delilah and Damian are brother and sister...Dinah and the other four boys are Delilah's children (she was pregnant when I got her and I didn't know)....anyways last night when I went to feed them...I found all five males on the bottom of their cage, looking like they were sleeping, except they were all dead...All five of them....it seriously looked like they fell asleep and died in their sleep...One was over by the food dish...one was on the other side of the food dish and the rest were in a pile (sleeping pile)...Degus aren't a hibernating animal and they felt cold to the touch, but it wasn't cold where they were so I know they didn't freeze, they didn't show any signs of illness, there was no injuries on them, I always made sure they had fresh water and food, but I have never seen a whole cage of rodents die at exactly the same time...I can't figure it out, the night before that they kept me up, chirping and squeaking like normal and were behaving like regular....This is just plain weird...out of 10 caged animals (2 rats, 1 rabbit, and 7 degus) I have 2 Degus (the females who were in a separate cage from the males to avoid matings) and a rabbit (Gandalf) left....now I'm terrified whenever I go to feed them and check on them that I am going to find them all dead....

on the upside, Oreo's two kittens are now walking around my mom's camper...Oreo is in the process of weaning them, the female is taking to wet cat food really well, the male won't try it yet...and they like to attack and play with everything from shoes, clothes they can reach, each other, Oreo and us...but since they have been kept in the camper with my mom and sister, they aren't used to the dogs yet...I took Peanut in there the other day and the female hissed at him and the male ran away and hid...Peanut ignored them both.

ratties, there could have been something, a bacteria or virus that attacked them all.  I would become a hand washing fiend when going to the other Degus.  I would also disinfect the cages very thoroughly and start some google searches.  Rabbits are lagamorphs, so may not be susceptible to the same things the rodents were.

Cuddles, sista.  Keep us posted on them, but be very careful with water and food.  Could also have been a mold or something that got into food.

Sheesh, I would be freaking out!

Dear Ratties, I am so sorry for your losses.        The boys weren't anywhere they could have gotten a whiff of carbon monoxide were they?   Big cuddle pile for you.

Your kittens sound enchanting.

my dad also suggested carbon monoxide...I'm not sure...I have two electric heaters in my camper to keep it warm, but usually only one is on when its cold....the way the cages were arranged for the last couple of weeks, was the rabbit's cage, the male degus homemade cage on top of the rabbit's cage...and the females degus aquarium (they kept escaping from all other cages) was next to the rabbits cage...the electric heater was level with the Rabbit cage, a couple of feet away, turned slightly away so it would keep them warm (rodents are very prone to respiratory infections) but no fully on them to make their water hot or make them too hot...then on warm days, the heater is turned off and the windows are opened and a fan is turned on to circulate the cool air....and on really hot days, I put a dish of ice cubes in each cage for them......I don't know if carbon monoxide would effect the top cages first or the bottom...but i didn't think about that right away...it could be carbon monoxide which makes me worry even more, cause if I don't use the heater Delilah, Dinah and Gandalf could get sick with respiratory infections, not to mention me, Sandy and Peanut getting sick as well, because the dogs sleep in my camper with me everynight..I used the heaters last winter, but nothing happened them...I am soo confused..

An electrical heater wouldn't produce carbon monoxide - have to have some source of combustion.  The camper doesn't have a gas furnace does it? Or a propane stove that might have a leak? Do you have any symptoms:  headache, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, or flu-like symptoms?

My other thought was contaminated food.  Did the boys eat the same food as your other rats?

Sending love and hugs.

Ratties, I'm so sorry to hear of your losses...you've lost more furbabies in the past year than anyone should have to bear.  I agree with the others; contaminated food, carbon monoxide, or a virus are the likely culprits. Cuddles to you.

The camper's gas heater was removed by the previous owners (our neighbors sold it to us cheap for me to have a place to sleep)...I had a propane heater that I used last year when the power went out or the electric heaters didn't seem to work like during blizzards but its still in storage from the summer and not hooked up...no propane tanks are near my camper either...No symptoms myself and the dogs are fine...but then again, one of the windows by my bed won't close all the way (I have to tape it shut during winter)...

The rats ate puppy chow or low protein cat food (too much protein isn't good for rats) with occasional chicken bones (after the chicken has been cooked) or other leftovers...my rats were spoiled, I would make them a small plate with small portions at Thanksgiving, lol (a tablespoon of mashed potatoes, a little bit of turkey, and a tiny amount of stuffing)...the degus diet is more like a rabbits so they eat rabbit food pellets with occasionally baby carrots, lettuce, broccoli and cellery...
