I hope these aren't too easy for the veterans but not to hard for the newcomer....I'll save my book questions for another day.

For 100, How many of born Whiskers were listed as Dominant in August 2008?
For 200, How many females were listed as being pregnant in August 2008?
For 300, How many meerkats were evicted in August 2008 and who was evicted the most?
For 400, Who are the founding females of the JaXX and who is their natal group?
For 500, Explain the ID Codes KMP uses for each Meerkat (what the letters and numbers mean)?

KittyCatAlison, I'm not sure if you know about FKMP yet...its friends of the Kalahari Meerkats and has information about the research behind Meerkat Manor... the site address is friends.kalahari-meerkats.com We use that site, KMP (kalahari-meerkats.com)...the book...the season episodes we can remember...and google a lot...

For 100, How many of born Whiskers were listed as
Dominant in August 2008?

For 100 What is 7?

For 200, How many females were listed as being pregnant in August 2008?

For 200 What is 7?

For 300, How many meerkats were evicted in August 2008 and who was evicted the most?

For 300 What is 10 and VWF115x3?

For 400, Who are the founding females of the JaXX and who is their natal group?

For 400 What are two Lazuli and One Hoax male?

For 500, Explain the ID Codes KMP uses for each Meerkat (what the letters and numbers mean)?

For 500 What is each meerkat is given a unique ID code (e.g. VLF021) at its birth, or when it is first identified. It then keeps this ID throughout its life.

the first letter of the code (“V? stands for “Van Zylsrus? to differentiate the animals at this study site from those at the Gemsbok Park (previous research location);

  • the second (and sometimes third) letter of the code is the initial of the group in which the animal was born (or where it was first identified) (e.g. L for Lazuli). Please note, some groups have double initials (e.g. Rascals = RR).
  • the next letter in the code denotes the animal’s sex (F or M). Pups are given the letter P until their sex is identifiable, then the P is changed to M or F.
  • the code ends with a three digit number which is simply allocated consecutively (i.e. VLF021 is the 21st animal to be named in Lazuli group).

As well as an ID code, each meerkat is given an individual name (e.g. Belgarion VLM001, Silks VVM001, Morgause VYF005, Flower VWF026, Yossarian VVM033 etc). These names are for day to day use, since they are for many researchers easier to remember than large numbers of codes. Litters of pups are normally named by the person working with the group. Once a meerkat is named, its name is seldom altered. No two living meerkats bear the same individual name.

The ID code is the name used most often in any observation notes taken by the researchers ?one usually refers to VAF005, not to Morgause. This is because the ID code carries information which the personal name does not contain. However, in day-to-day work with the meerkats, researchers often use the individual names. Many of the meerkats of the early project days did not have an individual name, or it was forgotten.

Lists of the meerkats as per various dates can be downloaded via the right-hand menu. Please note that the names Meerkat Manor uses are sometimes different or even interchanged with the individual names used in the Project.

The names of new groups are normally chosen by the Project team as a whole. All new groups must have a two-letter initial (e.g. RR for Rascals) because we have already used all the letters of the alphabet?

for 100, what is 7 including the Whiskers group, tho they aren't on the Life History report right now?

for 200, what is I never know how to answer this question, as it nspecifies sometime during the month or only at the end of the month, so I'll say 8 pregnant at the end of the month, plus 14 gave birth or aborted during the month so were pregnant some of the time, plus 1 lost her litter and 1 might have - so is that 8 or 23 or 24?????

for 300, what is 10 poor little girls, and sweet Burdock Whiskers Aztecs was evicted 3 times?

for 40, who are Diana and Papillion Lazuli?

for 500, what is the first letter identifies the study site, curently  V for Van Zylsrus (but it used to distinguish between the Klagadi Transfrontier Park and Van Zylsrus), the next 1 or 2 letters identify the group, the next letter specifies Male or Female, and the 3 numbers are a sequence number within the group (originally males and females had parallel sequence numbers, but that was changed to one sequence per group) - eg VWF026 is Flower, born at Van Zylsrus to the Wiskers, and the 26th Whisker; or VKUM004 is Eliot, born at Van Zyslrus to the Kung Fu, and the 4th Kung Fu; note that the group id is given to immigrating wild kats and to pups born in the group.

Great questions, Ratties!

For 100 What is 7?

For 200 What is 8?

For 300 What is 10/VWF115 Burdock x3?

For 400 Who are VLF128 Papillon and VLF102 Diana /Lazuli?

For 500 What is V stands for Van Zylsrus to differentiate from the previous study area; the second and sometimes third letter stands for the meerkat’s natal group; the next letter tells males, female, or pup; the last three digits stand for the birth order of the meerkats.
