The USDA has done it again!  I haven't even read all of this yet, I was so excited I had to get it here quickly!!

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)
Confiscates Emaciated Elephant:
Now in route to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee

Hohenwald, Tennessee (November 8, 2008)

The USDA has confiscated Ned, a severely underweight 21-year-old captive born, male elephant from Florida-based  circus trainer Lance Ramos, aka Lancelot Kollman.

On Saturday, November 8, Ned was confiscated from Ramos by the USDA for failure to comply with the Animal Welfare Act and was placed by USDA authority with The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. Two veteran elephant handlers were secured by the agency to ensure that Ned was safely loaded into the transport trailer supplied by The Elephant Sanctuary. Scott Blais, Sanctuary co-founder, will accompany Ned on the 775 mile journey. They are scheduled to arrive at The Elephant Sanctuary midday Sunday, November 9th.

Ned is the second elephant ever to be confiscated by the USDA. The first was Delhi, an ailing elephant owned by the Hawthorn Corporation and sent to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee in 2003.

Ned will reside only temporarily in his private facility at The Sanctuary. “We are working closely with other professionals to ensure that as soon as Ned’s health improves he can be relocated to his permanent home. Our focus over the next many weeks will be on Ned’s recovery,?stated Carol Buckley, Sanctuary Executive Director.

Ned was born October 10, 1987 in Tampa, Florida, one of the few elephants born in captivity to survive into adulthood. Ned is a first generation captive-born Asian elephant. His parents, Josie and Vance, both wild caught in Southeast Asia as babies, were the property of elephant trainer and circus performer, Roman Schmitt.  At the time of Ned’s birth Mr. Schmitt was manager of the Busch Gardens?elephant breeding program. At the age of two, Ned was sold to a circus elephant trainer named Buckles Woodcock and later performed in the Big Apple Circus. Sometime after the Big Apple Circus removed elephants from their line-up, Mr. Woodcock transferred Ned to Lance Ramos, another circus trainer and performer.  Recently, it was reported that Lance Ramos and Ned were performing in California with the Royal Hannaford traveling circus.

Operating on 2,700 acres in Hohenwald, Tennessee, The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee www.elephants.com   has been developed specifically to provide a place for traumatized elephants to recover from the debilitating experience of captivity. The nonprofit organization, accredited by The Association of Sanctuaries and licensed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, is designed specifically for old, sick or needy elephants that have been retired from zoos and circuses.

I hope they can find out what's wrong soon. Poor Ned! At least he finally got weighed.

Ned is doing a little better. After a dose of Merc-V remedy which is used to remove sand from an animals gut, Ned was visibly more relaxed and began to eat a larger quantity of hay. His stools are still loose but we are taking this one hour, one day at a time. His fecal cultures came back negative and we have not seen him pass any sand. Since it has been cold, he is staying close or inside the barn and we are able to inspect all of his manure.

Ned has been consuming lots of fresh cut bamboo. Luckily we have a very large and healthy stand right here at the quarantine facility. We are pleased that he is eating bamboo because it is the most natural food source for Asian elephants. It is high in fiber and low in protein; a perfect plant for elephants and one of their preferred choices in the wild.

We have found a remedy that Ned responds to very well. It is Merc-v and has an immediate calming effect on him whenever he appears to become a little agitated. Today, after he took a stroll around his yard, Ned spent most of the day in and out of his barn. Later in the evening he was found standing comfortably in his restraint chute. It is wonderful that he feels so comfortable in the chute. His distrust of the caregivers seems to have been replaced with curiosity. Now Ned reaches out gently to investigate his caregivers, whereas in the past he would lash out. Old habits are hard to break, especially when the habit is based in fear.

Great news!

January 1, 2009

Ned has been doing much better over the past few days. He has stabilized and seems to be feeling much better. His diet is now quite bland, but it seems to agree with him. Currently he is being fed smaller portions, spread throughout the day consisting of fruits and vegetables fed according to the proper food combination regime; fruits being fed first and separate from other foods. After he has digested the fruit, he is given a small portion of cooked oatmeal. He does not like the oatmeal yet, but we believe it is just a matter of time before he acquires a taste for it. The biggest change to his diet is the elimination of his regular grain. We suspect he has problems breaking down and absorbing the nutrients from the whole and processed grains. When different foods are combined, it makes it harder for his system to digest the foods. He has been eating his free choice hay in a constant steady manner and accepting his probiotics hidden inside pieces of fruit. Ned's diet is definitely back to the basics, which seems to agree with him.

I was sooo relieved to see the latest entry this morning!  The long gap without diary entries was making me nervous.   I do hope Ned will get over whatever is bothering his tummy and he can start to gain weight.

The news segment on Tara and Bella was fabulous!  Just wish I'd taped it.

You know what would be great?  If AP would do a series on the sanctuary like Meerkat Manor.   Every week they could tell a different elles story, then go on to the what happened this week sort of thing with plenty of ellie footage, etc.  The girls do enough exploring and swimming and Carole and Scott and caregivers and even the dogs would be in it.  Just a thought....
