Ok it is less than a month til the Kentucky Derby. I am going to have to really read closer as a lot of former picks are in the top 20 spots. But look who is at #17- Eight Belles the filly who has been causing a lot of sensation. Col. John is at # 5, War Pass # 1, Man oh Mandella what a strong list. And if Turf War opts out as most feel he will, then Denis of Cork moves up. Looks like this will be a most interesting Derby indeed..... Kentucky Derby: Graded Stakes Earnings Updated: April 7, 2008 The field for the 134th running of the $2 million guaranteed Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) on Saturday, May 3 at Churchill Downs is limited to 20 horses. If more than 20 are entered, preference will be given to entrants based on earnings in graded stakes races. Here is a look at earnings in those races for Kentucky Derby 134 nominees through April 7, 2008. Compiled by Ben Huffman, Churchill Downs racing secretary. The conditions for the 134th Kentucky Derby, as stated in the Churchill Downs condition book, are as follows: Supplemental nominations may be made upon payment of $200,000 and in accordance with the rules set forth. Starters shall be named through the entry box on Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time ("the Closing"). The maximum number of starters shall be limited to twenty (20). Supplemental Nominees will be allowed to enter but will not have preference over any Original Nominee and will not be allowed to start in the Race if the maximum number of starters has otherwise been reached by Original Nominees prior to or at the Closing. If the number of nominees exceeds the number of available starting positions at the Closing, these conditions shall be applied to determine which nominees will be allowed to start. In the event that more than twenty (20) entries pass through the entry box at the Closing, the starters shall be determined at the Closing from Original Nominees first, then to Supplemental Nominees if starting positions are still available with preference given to those horses that have accumulated the highest earnings in the Graded Stakes races, including all monies actually paid for performance in such Graded Stakes races. For purposes of this preference the graded status of each race shall be the graded status assigned to the race by the International Cataloguing Standards Committee in Part I of the International Cataloguing Standards as published by The Jockey Club Information Systems, Incorporated each year. Should additional starters be needed to bring the field to twenty(20) the remaining starters shall be determined at the Closing with preference given to those horses that have accumulated the highest earnings in Non-Restricted Sweepstakes. For purposes of this preference, a "Non-Restricted Sweepstakes" shall mean those Sweepstakes whose conditions contain no restrictions other than that of age or sex. In the case of ties resulting from preferences or otherwise, the additional starter(s) shall be determined by lot. Any horse excluded from running because of the aforementioned preference(s) shall be refunded the $25,000 entry fee and $200,000 supplemental fee, if applicable. An "also-eligible" list will not be maintained and in no event will starters be added or allowed to run in the Race which are not determined to be starters at the Closing. |

I am going for Eight Belles. I really like Tale of Ekati - his performance in his last race was super. A lot of the earlier touted colts are losing badly in subsequent races. Big Brown is high on a lot of people's list, that's for sure. |

I would like to see Eight Belles, Alina, and Proud Spell in the Derby. With Big Brown in the mix, that would be a nice superfecta. The fillies this year are really a good bunch. The colts not so much. But I would say Big Brown and Col John are possibly the best of the pretenders. |

Big Brown Works for Kentucky Derby by Steve Haskin Updated: April 18, 2008 Florida Derby (gr. I) winner Big Brown, likely favorite for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), breezed five furlongs in 1:00 3/5 at Palm Meadows Friday with regular exercise rider Michelle Nevin aboard. Owned by IEAH Stables and Paul Pompa, the son of Boundary ?Mien, by Lyphard has won all three of his career stakes by a total of 29 lengths, including a five-length score in the Florida Derby. “He breezed just like he always breezes five-eighths; well within himself, comfortable, no pressure,?trainer Rick Dutrow said. “We’re as happy as we can be with him right now. We don’t need to ask him for any more than that. We don’t even ask him for that. He just gallops around there at his own pace; it’s beautiful. He and Michelle seem to have a little thing going when they get to their breeze. Every time she’s breezed this horse it’s gone great.?/P> Dutrow said Big Brown will have one more work at Palm Meadows and then fly to Louisiville on April 28. |

Sister Slew, are you going to be awake and alert and ready to cheer for the Derby field after an arduous night competing in the Quirkie Anniversay Jeopardy Tournament? Good thing you have an extra hour to recuperate. I'm sure you will pick the finishers. |
