ODE TO TEXAS
by: Yvonne Green Bowman

When I was young, two years shy of twenty-one
My husband and I had things to be done.
We moved from his Mothers, and also his Dad.
To the state of Texas, and I Was so glad.

We packed our belongings, in an old duffle bag,
Along with his hand satchel, it made my arms sag.
We bought our tickets, and on the bus sat down,
Pretty soon we were moving, Yee haw, Texas bound.

First stop, was Sevierville, in the state of Tennessee
That’s where my mother, worked serving dinner and tea.
We spent the night in her room, with only one bed.
With me in the middle “I must have been out of my head?

On one side, my hubby lay snoring in his sleep
While on the other side, my mother was slumbering deep.
I lay on my back, I just couldn’t breathe,
Soon, the anger inside me was beginning to seethe.

I punched Bill in the ribs, and said YOU get on the floor,
So I can rest, or you can just walk out that door.
He calmly took a blanket, and made a palate neat,
Lay down, and so quickly, was back fast asleep.

The next day our trip headed on to our destination.
Soon I began to believe, that Texas was a nation.
Our ride on the bus, had ended at Randolph Air Base,
But it was two more miles, to his sisters Place.

The bus didn’t go in that direction, as a mater of fact,
So we hiked the two extra miles down a railroad track.
In the middle of the night, we set out to walking,
So tired, and bedraggled, we hardly were talking.

Around two in the morning, Her house was in view,
It was the most welcome sight that I ever knew.
We had finally arrived our traveling was o’er,
Tomorrow he’d start to work in a store.

He worked for a year for his sis and her hubby,
And we rented an apartment from an old fuddy duddy.
The sink was outside, not in the house,
And doing the dishes, made me feel like a louse.

Outside we went, when we wanted a bath,
For the shower and bathroom was just down the path.
Be glory what a hoot, now shiver me timber,
It was an experience I’ll always remember.
