Everything you do in life, every choice you make, has a consequence. When you do things without thinkin', then you ain't makin' the choice. The choice is makin' you. Mark Steven Johnson, Ghostrider, 2007

Vespers by Louise Glück In your extended absence, you permit me use of earth, anticipating some return on investment. I must report failure in my assignment, principally regarding the tomato plants. I think I should not be encouraged to grow tomatoes. Or, if I am, you should withhold the heavy rains, the cold nights that come so often here, while other regions get twelve weeks of summer. All this belongs to you: on the other hand, I planted the seeds, I watched the first shoots like wings tearing the soil, and it was my heart broken by the blight, the black spot so quickly multiplying in the rows. I doubt you have a heart, in our understanding of that term. You who do not discriminate between the dead and the living, who are, in consequence, immune to foreshadowing, you may not know how much terror we bear, the spotted leaf, the red leaves of the maple falling even in August, in early darkness: I am responsible for these vines.

Do It Anyway by: Mother Teresa People are often unreasonable, illogical and self-centered; forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies; succeed anyway. If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you; be honest and frank anyway. What you spent years building, someone could destroy overnight; build anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous; be happy anyway. The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; do good anyway. Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough; give the world the best you have anyway. |

- Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are
the most accessible and wisest of counsellors, and the most patient of teachers. - Charles W. Eliot (1834 - 1926), The Happy Life, 1896

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by: Robert Frost Whose woods these are I think I know. His house is in the village though; He will not see me stopping here To watch his woods fill up with snow. My little horse must think it queer To stop without a farmhouse near Between the woods and frozen lake The darkest evening of the year. He gives his harness bells a shake To ask if there is some mistake. The only other sound's the sweep Of the easy wind and downy flake. The woods are lovely, dark, and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep. One of my and Mr. Beth's favorites. |

Lullaby Now the day is done, Now the shepherd sun Drives his white flocks from the sky; Now the flowers rest On their mother's breast, Hushed by her low lullaby. Now the glowworms glance, Now the fireflies dance, Under fern-boughs green and high; And the western breeze To the forest trees Chants a tuneful lullaby. Now 'mid shadows deep Falls blessed sleep, Like dew from the summer sky; And the whole earth dreams, In the moon's soft beams, While night breathes a lullaby. Now, birdlings, rest, In your wind-rocked nest, Unscared by the owl's shrill cry; For with folded wings Little Brier swings, And singeth your lullaby. Louisa May Alcott

Middle age is when you've met so many people that every new person you meet reminds you of someone else. Ogden Nash (1902 - 1971)

That one by Frost is one of my favorites too Beth.... WHEN I'M A LITTLE OLD LADY..... I'll live with my children and bring them great joy-- To repay all I have had from each girl and boy. I shall draw on the walls and scuff up the floor; Run in and out without closing the door. I'll hide frogs in the pantry, socks under my bed, Whenever they scold me, I'll just hang my head. I'll run and I'll romp, always fritter away The time to be spent doing chores every day. I'll pester my children when they're on the phone; As long as they're busy, I won't leave them alone. I'll hide candy in closets, rocks in a drawer, And never pick up my clothes from the floor. I'll dash off to the movies and not wash a dish I'll plead for allowance whenever I wish. I'll stuff up the plumbing and deluge the floor, As soon as they've mopped it, I'll flood it some more. When they correct me, I'll lie down and cry-- Kicking and screaming, not a tear in my eye. I'll take all their pencils and flashlights, and then When they buy new ones, I'll take them again. I'll spill glasses of milk to complete every meal; Eat my banana and just drop the peel. Put toys on the table, spill jam on the floor, I'll break lots of dishes as though I were four. What fun I shall have!! What joy it will be!! To live with my children --- LIKE THEY LIVED WITH ME!!! “What could be more beautiful than a dear old lady growing wise with age? Every age can be enchanting, provided you live within it.?
