1/2 C. Shortening, 1/2 tsp. salt, 1/2 C. Brown Sugar (packed), 1 C. Flour sifted.
(second layer):
1 C. Brown Sugar firmly packed, 1 tsp. Vanilla, 2 eggs well beaten, 2 Tbsp. flour, 1/2 tsp. Baking Powder, 1/4 tsp. salt, 1/2 C. shredded cocoanut, 1 C. nuts coarsley chopped.
 
Combine shortening, salt and brown sugar and cream thoroughly.  Add flour and blend.  Spread mixture in 8x12x2 pan (9x13) greased with shortening.        Bake in mod. slow oven 325 deg. 15 min. until slightly brown.                                                   Add 1 C. Brown Sugar and vanilla to beaten eggs.  Beat until thick and foamy, then add 2 Tbsp. flour, B.P., Salt, Cocoanut, and Nuts.  Blend.  Spread over baked mixture.  Bake 25 more minutes.
 
This is a very old recipe of my Mother's.  I made it for the first time 2008.  She served it to her group of women friends when it was her time to have them over.  I never forgot the joy in sampling these delicious bars.
