Candle magick is the art of taking a candle and using it as a focus point for spells, Spell work and magickal prayers. Candle magick is the art of combining magickal runes, essential oils and herbs to produce a desired effect. You can use a combonation of one, all, or none of these in your spell, as with all magick it's a personal choice. Candles can be of a color specific to spell desired, Day of week, Gender, Etc. They can be any size or shape. Birthday cake candles work just as well as expensive beeswax candles and are easier and cheaper to get hold of. The size and shape of the candle makes little difference, it's the energy and intent put into the spell that matters. You don't need a lot of tools or space to do candle magick, you don't even need to cast a circle unless you really want to. All you need is something to carve the runes into the candle with, (Hint: Sewing needles work wonderfully and give you more control than using a big, bulky, unwieldy athame), something to put the candle in and a place to burn it safely. Altars work well for this. So do bathtubs, sinks and the tops of Stoves. Be wary of your environment. If you have animals or small children you may want to do your candle magick in a place that's inaccesable to them or that you can seal off away from them. There are many techniques and ways of doing candle magick. I'll try to cover the basics and you can experiment from there. Candle magick can be used for many differant things; Money, prosperity, luck, getting a new job, cleansings, banishings, protection and healing. Hell it can even be used to help start a late menstrual cycle! Candle magick is almost as endless in uses as any other kind of magick, BUT keep in mind the wiccan rede and the laws of threefold return when you do candle magick. It's not without it's own price to pay. In the following sections I will cover candle magick techniques, colors, oils and herbs to use, and finally some sample spells you can use with them.
Candle Magick, as I said in the introduction, is the art of taking a candle and turning it into a focus for our Magick, Spells, Prayers, etc. Basic candle magick technique for a specific spell is to take a candle of the appropriate color to the desired spell effect. Usually a small votiive or taper candle is best. Just remember you are going to have to put energy and your own will power into this candle as it's burning so you don't want it too big. I also recommend keeping seperate candles around for hearth candles and general energies. I keep a large 20 hour candle that I lite for general purposes. Once you've picked a candle of the appropriate color, (I'll cover that later), You'll want to carve it with runes approrpriate to the desired spell outcome. A sewing needle works wonderfully well for This purpose. You can if you wish, consecrate a seperate needle just for this purpose or you can just grab a needle as needed, the choice is yours and a sewing needle gives you much more control and accuracy in carving the rune than using a bulky athame or other blade. Appropriate runes for Money, Prosperity, Healing, etc. can be found in most better wiccan books published in mass. I suggest Starhawks "The Spiral Dance." or Scott Cunninghams "Wicca for the Solitay practioner". Both have some good runes in them and saves me the trouble of trying to draw them out here. Once you have some runes carved on your candle, you'll want to annoit it with an appropriate essential oil or other scented oil. Patchouli oil and lavender oil are some good all purpose oils to keep around. (You can get relatively cheap versions of essential oils from Azure Green distributors at http://www.Azuregreen.com ). You can also use any non alcohol based body sprays' perfumes etc for spells on a particular person or to attract a mate, etc. Once you've carved and annoited your candle, the third step is to rub some herbs of an appropriate nature on the candle. Spome good basic ones are: Lavender, Rosemary, Vanilla, Jasmine, Oregano, Basil, etc. You can find most of your Magickal herbs in your local grocery store or your own kitchen. After you've done steps 1-3 the last step is to charge the candle with energy and find a safe place to let it burn. Once you've taken a candle and dedicated it for a speific purpose or spell you must either let it burn completely or only burn it for it's set purpose. Remember to focus more energry into the candle every so often as it's burning to reinforce the spell. Remember this golden rule about candle magick... aside from having the candle and a safe place to burn it. All other steps are OPTIONAL, if you want to cast a quicky spell birthday cake candles work wonderfully and burn out quickly. You can be as particular or as frugal in Candle magick as you can in any other type of Magick. Sample candle Magick spells 
Spell for money/Prosperity: A green candle Runes- Money sign For your part of the world, One for weallt, Good fortune. Perhaps one for a gift(Unexpected) Oils: Patchouli and/or lavender Herbs: Oregano or lavender Follow steps 1-3 in the techniques section. Take a coin or Bill of small denomination and place it on your altar or where ever you are going to burn the candle. Or if it's to pay bills, Take a photo copy of that bill and just before the candle burns completely out. Lite the copy of the bill. Or burn it in your censor. Don't forget to contribute some small amount of the money gained to a charity or someone less fortunate. Spell For Fertility. A green candle Runes: Gender rune, Fertility rune Oils: Vanilla Herbs: Lavender. (Or your mates favorite flower or scent. Same for the oil used) Follow steps 1-3 on the techniques page. Visualize the outcome you want. Remember that fertility can apply to mental status as well. Burn the candle along with some appropriate incense in your censer or burner. Spell to Bring on a late Menstrual Cycle IMPORTANT NOTE ON THIS SPELL: DON'T cast this spell unless you are SURE you are NOT PREGNANT. Magick is very powerful and can cause you to miscarry if you cast this spell without precautions!!!!!!!!! One RED Candle Runes: woman, Orderliness, Blood drops Oils: Patchouli, Lavender or your favorite scent Herbs: Lavender, Mugwort Follow steps 1-3. Take a sanitary napkin or tampax and place it on your altar or whereever is safe and you are going to do the candle spell. Visualize starting your cycle. Lite the candle and let it burn. |
