Does anyone have any stories about some of the dead band members from the past? I've never heard of any. My favorite band only has 2 original members left. All the rest are dead. But they are as good now as they ever were on stage. Their songwriting skills seemed to die as the members did. But they still come out with some really good new stuff though. Lynyrd Skynyrd will live forever. You know I left one member out, Artimus Pyle, he's still alive and living in S. Carolina but left the band about 15 years ago. So there's 3 living members left. |

Well....I don't have any stories about dead band members, but I have one about "almost dead" ones. Two years ago at a casino over in Washington State....they advertized that the original Comets from Bill Haley and the Comets were going to make an appearance there. Now these guys have to be ancient!!! Bill Haley and the Comets came out in the 50's and they were in their 20's then! Add 50 years to that....here they come folks...in their wheel chairs and with their walkers all with oxygen tanks, or generators and being attended by nurses....."Stay in the lounge folks...the Comets are going to rock your world...as soon as they figure out who plays what!" |

Pony a few years ago I saw the Ventures. They were big in the 50''s and early 60's. These guy's were old but still played pretty good. I saw B.B. King about 6 years ago and I dont know how he still stands up, let alone play music. |

Pony a few years ago I saw the Ventures. Last year I was in Seaside, Oregon. I didn't know it at the time, but they were having the West Coast Beach Volleyball playoff's there. I parked my car and got out and immediately heard live music coming from the beach. I walked up to the turnaround and there they were....The Ventures...live on the beach and banging out some of their old stuff. The beach was littered with people and there was about 10 nets set up. I watched this for about 20 minutes thinking.....all we need now is to see Annette Funichello and Frankie Avalon to come walking down the beach...followed by that comical motorcycle gang, The Ratz, from those movies and the scene would be complete! |

Confed: I have noticed that a lot of the old bands are making comebacks. Paul Revier and the Raiders, The Ventures, Sha Na Na, The Village People and a lot of those "old" bands are coming back and doing gigs usually at casinos. Now they fit into the "old" band category because the members are "old"! Little Richard and Chuck Berry are both in their 70's and still rockin'! I can remember back in the 50's when Rock got started. People were saying: "Oh....this Rock music will never last!" Wanna bet! We had just come out of the "Big Band" era and gone through a little Be Bop and needed a change. Rock gave us that. In the mid 60's Folk Music stuck its foot in the door and made the scene, but then died out after a few years. After Folk, Rock with through a transitional change, It got louder and heavier and kept on doing that until it bacame what it is today. Mostly noise with very little musical quality. As for groups...My favorite group was The Mamma's & The Pappa's. That was the best blending of four voices I have ever heard. My favorite among them was Mamma Cass. She was overweight, not very good looking, but that woman could belt out a song! She had a "set of pipes" that just wouldn't quit! Man! That woman could sing! The oly group that come close to them in The Manhatten Transfer. |

Gee Pony, how did you manage to overlook Disco? You would never believe it, I still don't, when I was 17 & 18 I used to wear the disco clothes, the high heel shoes and go and have my hair done every week. Man was I cool back then.( LOL). We used to go dancing every night. Then go to the park till about 4 am. Now a days you get locked up for stuff like that. |

Confed: I was trying to avoid Disco! I never got into that! All the music....exactly 120 beats per minute...those outlandish "costumes" the guys wore...the shirts open half way down the chest....several gold chains around the neck and skin tight pants...with bell bottoms right above platform shoes! Horrible! ACK! Now...The Village People was a gay group, and I didn't care all that much for their music, but the show was good. The costuming on it was great! About 4 years ago a friend and I were at a baseball game and there was a guy sitting about three rows down from us....still in his "Disco Duds". Platform shoes...bell bottoms...open shirt and gold chains. We figured he got caught in a "Disco Time Warp" and just never got out of it. The guy was 20 years out of touch! |
