How Fascinating! I worked at a Newspaper also when I lived in San Pablo, California. I stayed home with my children until my youngest was 3, then I went back to college. I wasn't allowed to work because their dad wanted me to stay home and take care of (his kids) which was fine with me because he worked at Berkeley University and we lived a nice comfortable life. I majored in PhotoJournalism and became head photographer for the college paper for the entire year. Believe it or not I minored in childhood education and ended up a school teacher.
As head photographer I was allowed to work for the West County Times, which was a small newspaper in our area. I wanted the experience and ended up with my own Byline for my articles and for my photography. It was so very interesting because they sent me out to take the photos and write the story. I even covered the Lesher Party each year, me and one other person. I did nothing to put the paper together, I just went out wherever they sent me as a reporter and photographer. Couldn't get anywhere tho. Most newspapers are family owned and operated. They let you in but at a minimum, Lots of nepatism. They are still in business to this day.
I kept every photo and every article and column I ever wrote in a big scrapbook. Even kept all the ones from college. Everything is turning brown now and I plan to refurbish the entire scrapbook with the new acid free sprays they have on the market now.
That was a really happy and fun time in my adult life. When I get a chance I will write that story. rosie
