The D train's route was extended to Coney Island in the mid-1950s. Before that, the D train went as far as _________?

The answer: CHAMBERS STREET, later known as CHAMBERS STREET-HUDSON TERMINAL, then known as WORLD TRADE CENTER. It's still known as the World Trade Center station.

Ellen, there are two stations side by side, as I'm sure you know since you still ride the subway. Tke "local" station has tracks that end with bumpers: it's a terminal station. The E train terminates there. In past years, the AA, CC and before that the D train terminated there. The "express" station serves trains that continue on to Brooklyn--currently the A and the C.

Originally, both stations were known as Chambers Street/Hudson Terminal. Later, the terminal part of the station (the "local" side) was known as Hudson Terminal. From what I've observed from maps and websites--I haven't been to those stations in years--the "local" side is referred to as the World Trade Center station. Perhaps the express side is still called Chambers Street.

More to Ellen--I just re-read your reply and noticed your reference to the Chambers Street station being across town from the WTC station. First, let me say that at that end of Manhattan, "across town" is only a few blocks. Secondly, I'll point out that there are 2 other Chambers Street stations--one serving the 1, 2 and 3, and the other serving the J, M and Z.

Fulton Street serves the 1,2 ,3 and A ,C and M and Z not Chambers, I know that area well I still live in NYC and have worked there for 4 years. I still disagree with the reference to Chambers being changed to a WTc name, I will ask my dad who worked down there at the time the Trade Ctr was built. Also the A and C do not go to the same area in Brooklyn that the D and now Q train goes to - it is currently called the Brighton Line and serves the area that I live in.

Ellen-

1. The Chambers Street station on the Nassau Street line serves the J, M and Z.

2. The Fulton Street station at William Street serves the 2 and 3.

3. The Fulton Street station at Broadway serves the 4 and 5.

4. The Broadway-Nassau Street station serves the A and C.

5. There are free transfer connections linking all of the above stations to each other.

6. The present-day D train doesn't go there. It terminated at Chambers Street before 1954 or 1955, when it was re-routed to Coney Island over the old BMT Culver line. In 1967, the D train was again re-routed over the Manhattan Bridge (by way of the Chrystie Street connection) to Coney Island via the Brighton Line. Currently, due to Manhattan Bridge construction. the D train only goes as far as 34th Street in Manhattan; Brooklyn-bound passengers can change there for the Q Local or Q Express which will go as far as Brighton Beach. . .the Coney Island terminal is being demolished pending rebuilding, and is being served by shuttle buses.

I suggest that you take a close look at the current subway maps and go to the MTA website for the most current information. As for history, I'm a long-time subway buff. . .I've been keeping tabs on the NYC system for almost 40 years. . .and I remember details and info from before you were born.

I knew that. That's the way the locals express themselves.
