Jim, that's tough. I have been to 3 funerals since October (one sister's brother-in-law; my father-in-law in October within 3 days of each other, one sister's mother-in-law this week). We are still doing Christmas because . . . end the year on a good note. My sister's mother-in-law we have known her for over 30 years (she was like mom in a dysfunctional sort of way). It's good you are having something . . . I think the ones who have parted want you to celebrate their life and your family traditions. And it sucks you are going into the hospital. I hope they can hold it off til after the holidays. I hope all goes well for you. I had a scare into this week . . . doctor checked my carotids and saw major blockage so I had to go for an MRA and the test came back that the blood is flowing. But had my crestor upped and am now taking low dose aspirin. |

Jim, did not know about your father-in-law, my condolences. Out of the loop with all the problems in my family. Hope the health problems go well. |

No party, just immediate family for Christmas. My kids will be coming home. I have to get out to Lagurdia this morning to pick up my daughter. Might see my sister and nephews if they come down to see my mom around Christmas. If I do have a party you will be invited Herb |

Thanks Buddy, I will. Give my best to your family as well. We really have to do something about getting together in 2009. Merry Christms to you also. |

We just had a 65th birthday party for my wife with 40 people attending. Before I met her, I didn't know 40 people. On Christmas Eve, we're going to a friend for a party, and on New Years eve we're going to a party I'll love. They've invested in a pizza place that will be catering. Did this 2 years ago and it was the best pizza I've eaten in Chicago. |

Was it Chicago style pizza? |

No, that's why it was so good. Closest thing to NY style that I've had out here. |

Thin crust, baked quickly in a very hot oven. |

I don't care for "Chicago style"/deep dish/pan pizza. The crust has a funny taste; the toppings and the cheese are UNDER the sauce; you can't wrap a slice in waxed paper, fold it lengthwise and walk out onto the street eating it like G-d intended.
I do like Chicago-style hotdogs--spicier and bigger and with more "bite" than New York dogs--but I can live without all the weird stuff like the peppers and the lengthwise pickle spear and the tomato that usually decorate the Chicago dog. People here give me strange looks when I lament the fact that you can't get a hotdog with sauerkraut anywhere around here...well, maybe 1 or 2 places, like American Dogs on Navy Pier... |

I think deep-dish is ok if there's enough sauce, cheese and toppings to balance out the breadiness. |

Next time you're in Chicago, try Edwardo's. I'm not crazy about the deep dish but this has tons of cheese and tomato stuff on it. My treat, ask Marty how to find me and we can have it while he sits and grumbles. |
