What was the first brand of cigarette that you ever smoked? How old were you? Where did you get the cigarette from?

For me...It was a Camel cigarette that I pinched from my grandfather. I was 8 years old...I didn't actually buy my first pack of cigarettes until I was about 11 years old...Marlboro. I smoked all the way up to Last October 21st...then quit cold turkey!

Marlboro was the first brand.  I smoked my first cigarette at 13 years old.  I was in 8th grade and made a new friend, Marian, had moved out of the neighborhood, but the school agreed to let her stay and finish out 8th grade and graduate with us.  She would come home with me for lunch each day and when we walked back to school she used to have a cigarette and one day I tried one.

My sister bought a carton of Salems in '65 and I filched a pack.  I had to hide them outside so they were eventually ruined by the rain and I only got to smoke one or two.  In the swinging early seventies I smoked Gauloises', verrrry French, you know.  They smelled like pipe tobacco.  I finally gave that stuff up when all the buildings went smokeless and I couldn't bum a smoke off anyone.

Whatever brand my dad smoked; I forget, as he'd switch now and them. We snuck some in the bedroom, and eventually got caught.

Now and them???

Lessee. . .Dad smoked Camels, Raleighs (for the coupons), Kent, Newport. . .

I tried a pipe for a short time but didn't enjoy it enough to justify filling it, lighting it, re-lighting it, cleaning it, etc.

No further comment on my "smoking," okay, man??

I used to buy mine, when I started buying them, LOL, at John's Candy Store, on Tremont and Laffeyette or at Uncle Als, on Bruckner and Edison...also a great place to buy fire works around the fourth....both places at the time.

They called unfiltered Old Gold's 'prison cigarettes' and Marlboro's 'cowboys'; to my recollection.

Pall Malls were the prison cigarettes....The funny thing about Pall Malls, especially since they were the only cigarettes sold in NYS run pens in the 50's and 60's....on the pack of Pall Mall Cigs, still till this day, there is a slogan that says "found where ever particular people congregate."
