Did you ever break the law when you were growing up in the Bronx? How? Did you get caught? and...What was your punishment?

Changing cars on the subway was legal then.  But I also carried a knife, bought and drank liquor as a minor, committed bus pass fraud, snuck into several school activities, and the like.  I also bought some fireworks in Chinatown.

I hitchhiked, too.  That was illegal.

Twice I used someone's ID to get into a bar when I was 17. This was the day's of no picture ID. We used to practice the signature in case the bouncer at the door made you write the name on the ID.

I also bought a fake draft card and changed the date on my birth certificate.  It wasn't that hard to do.  Someone I was with once ran the toll on the Henry Hudson where it crosses the river into the Bronx.  That was stupid.

I entered the grit stores and explicit movies in Times Square when I was in high school, far younger than 21.  There also was a bootleg joint out in Teaneck which sold liquor after hours.

I started going to bars near the old Madison square Garden when I was 15.  I always got served and was never asked for ID, I looked that old.  When I was 17, I decided that I really didn't like beer and stopped drinking it.

How I broke the law:

1.  Bought liquor and beer illegally
2.  Bought and smoked pot
3.  Bought and smoked cigarettes

Hey Rita- in our day it was not against the law to buy cigarettes- used to buy them for my dad when I was 13, later bought them for myself. Today you must be 18 and show ID.
