Again, thanks to Bill Twomey... Evander Childs was born in 1843 in NYC where he taught for quite a time before heading up the Bronx to become principal of PS 61. (PS 2) in 1880, then in 1891 he became principal of School 90 (later PS 10). When he passed away at his desk in 1912 he had taught for over half a century and his popularity was immense. On May 12th 1912 a meeting was held at Morris High School to begin the process of naming the new high school in the Bronx after Mr. Childs......over 2000 people signed the petition. The cornerstone for Evander Childs HS was finally laid at 184th St and Creston Avenue. When construction was completeed and the new school was dedicated on May 27, 1919 the keys to the school were presented to the president of the Board of Ed, Anning S. Prall. The school has long since relocated to Gun Hill Road. |

Fred, glad you're back how are you feeling? My mom went to Morris in the 1940's said it was a beautiful school (looks like a castle!) What about some pics of the old alma mater P.S. 107? |
