In Iowa and Montana now the majority of foster placements are due to the meth epidemic and are with the kids' grandparents (according to yesterday's newspaper).  Did you have anyone in your set who was raised by his or her grandparents?  I know its very popular now with the big rise of out of wedlock births since 1970 but I can only think of two kids who were raised by their grands in my circle.  One kid's mom worked on a cruise line and the other kids mom abused drink (both dads were out of the picture).  Did you have many?

I don't recall any of my friends being raised by their grandparents. I had one classmate in PS 72 who was a foster child...nice kid who I always felt sorry for.

There is a group in Boulder called "Grandparents raising their grandchildren", sponsored by the city.  I attended a couple of their monthly meetings.  I am not really raising my grandchildren, but I do take care of them 9 hours a day for the 5 work days.  My son and his wife cannot afford day care for the twins, so we have been doing it now for 3 years.

I stopped going to the group meetings because it was essentially for grandparents who had full control of the grandchildren usually  because of drugs, jail or alcoholism of their children. The participants of the group were very open in telling us of  the problems of their children.

None of the friends I grew-up with were foster children or raised by grandparents.

I do however remember a few of my friends having their grandparents living with them.  They usually had an apartment downstairs in the house....quite a few actually.

None.
It's amazing to think how much things have change socially in the past 30 -40 years.  Some for the better and some for the worse.  I sometimes wonder if the dramatic changes are unique to this time frame or has the social network always changed with such rapidity through history.

Did you know that Obama was raised by his grands in Hawaii for at least three years?  True story.  When Clinton's father died, his mother left him with his grands while she went to nursing school.  Jack Nicholson was raised by his grandma who waited until he was 12 to tell him that the woman he considered his sister was really his mother!

According to the movie "Beyond the Sea," the same was true about Bobby Darin. . .but he was an adult when he was told the truth.
