Yes it is appropriate.  I wish we could spare the family the hurt, we can't but we can let him know we are here.

I feel a special kinship with Warren because we come from the same area and went to the same elementary school, and because we've exchanged several emails on that and other subjects.

My deepest condolences to Warren and his family.
