Karen - I noticed in one of your earlier posts that you attended OLM.
I graduated from there in 1962.
I remember a Karen that live on Marion, South of 188th (around the corner from the candy store).
When were you at OLM?

I graduated from OLM in 1969- lived on Kingsbridge Rd. across from Poe Park. The only other classmate I knew named Karen lived in that area but I thought it was on Tiebout. Last name was Willims. There was a family named Coyle on my block- I think one of the boys graduated around the same time you did. Maybe some of my classmates siblings graduated with you. There are two class pictures from 1962, one of the boys dept. and one of the girls dept. posted on the Bronx Board. You are the first person on this board that I have heard from that went to the same school I did.

Karen -
Well, you're not the Karen I was thinking about.  Her last name was Schact (sp?).
You must've been in the 2nd grade when I graduated.
I knew some folks up in the Poe Park area (lived on Valentine) who also went to OLM, some of them probably around your age.
I think I remember a Kevin Coyle, but hey, my short-term AND long-term memory is all but shot!
I was back in the neighborhood a couple of years ago (I'm in Seattle now).
The downstairs church where the kids masses were held is torn up; no longer used.
The upstairs looks EXACTLY as I remembered it.
I went through the school also.  Except for the different desks, it also looks remarkably like I remember it!
Don't know if you're aware that the "shrine" is also gone - torn down and replaced with some sort of building.
   Where are you at now?

Yes, Kevin Coyle , that was it. Can't believe the lower church is gone- remember having attendance taken by the nuns? I left the Bronx in Dec. 1977. Now live in upstate NY in a small town about 10 miles outside of Saratoga Springs, called Gansevoort. I remember the shrine- wasn't it behind the rectory? I remember being told to stay away from the area when alone even way back in 1969, that it was not safe.

Hi Karen,   It's me, Warren, from Kingsbridge. Was OLM the church and school down around 196th street and  Briggs or Bainbridge?  I had a close friend, Ann Marie Walters (her father George, mother Ann, sister Cathleen) went to that church. I believe Ann Marie went to OLM, also.  I last heard of Ann Marie at 2690 Morris Ave. way back in the 60's. We went to PS86 together.

Warren, the church and school on 196th and Briggs was Our Lady of Refuge. Our Lady of Mercy was on Marion off of fordham road. Actually OLR was much closer to my house, but parishes had strict divisions where you could go to school. My building was the dividing line- I lived on194th and Kingsbridge- a short walk to 196th and Briggs. Even though it was closer, I was not in "the parish" and had to go to OLM. From previous posts, I know you are older than me- don't remember the Ann Marie you mention, maybe there are siblings I would know?
