While browsing through the Legends of Hockey website earlier this evening, I discovered that former Ranger goalie Lorne (Gump) Worsley died a couple of weeks ago. . .January 26, 2007.
Physically, Gump was hockey's answer to Yogi Berra. . .short, squat, no matinee idol, not athletic looking but very capable of getting the job done.
When played for the Rangers in the 1950s and early 1960s, he was not only the team's last line of defense but their only defense, stopping shot after shot that a good team--which the Rangers were not--never would have allowed to have been taken in the first place.
Gump was traded to the Montreal Canadiens in (I believe) 1963 in a deal that brought Jacques Plante, Phil Goyette and Donnie Marshall to New York, and later played for the Minnesota North Stars. He was one of the last goalies to wear a face mask.
So long, Gump. |

0ne time, while he was playing for the Rangers, a sportswriter asked him which team gave him the most trouble. Without hesitating, he said "The Rangers." |
