Okay--upon further review I see that Clete Boyer's #6 was already covered. . .but what about his original number?

And while we're on the subject, what were the original numbers worn by these Yankees whose famous numbers are retired:

Billy Martin
Mickey Mantle
Yogi Berra
Whitey Ford
Joe DiMaggio
Don Mattingly

Boyer wore 34 and Mantle wore 6.
By the way, I think Bobby thought I was refering to Mantle when I asked for the number for Roy Hobbs.
But I was actually referring to the movie The Natural in which Hobbs wore #9. Many people think the character played by Robert Redford was based on Mantle.

No Joe, I didn't confuse Hobbs with Mantle..I thought Hobbs was #7.

And since no one is ever going to answer the #9 question...it was SteveWhitaker who wore 9 after Maris.

Marty is correct with his answers above. Phil Linz wore 34 and 12 ...Al Downing wore 21....Kubek wore 34 before 10. Richardson wore 17 and 29 before #1.....Duren wore 26......Arroyo 47

You know how all this started? It was originally the batting order. That's why Ruth had No. 3 and Gehrig 4. To this day, no. 1 tends to be worn by a scrappy infielder leadoff-type guy.

OK Marty..I got one wrong. And that brings me Frank Tepedino who wore 21.  Frank was Brooklyn born and played for a short time with the Yanks and a couple of other teams. Never made it to  a full time career in baseball. Frank worked for the FDNY and was cited for bravery on 9-11.

The reason I know so much about Frank is...as an 18 year old kid I worked with Mr. Tepedino at the Alexanders warehouse on Zerega avenue in the Bronx. He worked there for at least  one off season while with the Yanks.  We used to go outside during lunch and toss the football around.
