Another old Yankee has passed away.

Lefty pitcher Tommy Byrne has died at the age of 87.

Tommy pitched for the Yanks in the 1940s and into the early 1950s, then was traded to the St. Louis Browns. . .and from there to the Washington Senators and the Chicago White Sox. . .then drifted back into the minor leagues before being resurrected by the Yankees late in the 1954 season.  He pitched for the Yanks in '55 and '56 before retiring.

Tommy was the starting and losing pitcher in the 7th game of the 1955 World Series, when the Dodgers finally beat the Yanks and became Woild Champeens.

Alhough he usually posted winning records, his bases on balls were a big problem.  Legend has it that he was traded to St. Louis in the early 1950s because Yankee management couldn't stand to watch him pitch and put all those men on base.

Tommy Byrne wore a number that has been retired by the Yankees.  What was the number and in whose honor was it retired?

Tommy Byrne wore number 23 in his last stint with the Yanks (1954-1957).

That number has been retired in honor of Don Mattingly.
