OK, we had the question of if Ted Williams was Hispanic (like his mom).  Now, who gets to play for what country in the World Baseball Classic?  Remember now, "those folks" are always saying we should let go of ethnic divisions.  So the Padres' Mike Piazza (born in Pennsylvania) will play for -- Italy!  I grant you Juan Uribe and Ichiro Suzuki were born outside the US so its no wonder they're playing for their national teams.  But this could have put Roy Campanella on the team of his father's homeland -- Italy!

I agree that it is ridiculous. Piazza is an American, but maybe we should let him play for Italy so the American baserunners can run around the bases without any fear of being thrown out.
Arod did the right thing by saying he would play for the U.S. and not Dominican, since he was born here.

I think the whole thing is a dumb idea.

For once, Marty and I are on the same page. I think this whole thing is stupid. The risk of injury and the effects on the baseball season are not worth it.

Case in point:

Cardinals' pitcher Mark Mulder is from South Holland, Illnois, a Chicago suburb.

Because he's from South Holland, he was approached to play for The Netherlands in the WBC. Honest!!!!

Good point Mike, if a player gets hurt than they screw up the rest of the year on the team they get paid for playing for.  The idea is nice in theory...but really should have been rethought.  I can understand why George S. would be annoyed.....that's alot of loot on the line.
