Today the Yankees acquired right fielder Bobby Abreu and right handed pitcher Cory Lidle from the Phildelphia Phillies in exchange for the immortal Matt Smith and a bunch of other minor leaguers.
Abreu will take over in right, replacing the Melky Cabrera-Aaron Guiel-Bobby Crosby-Bernie Williams merry-go-round.
Lidle will take over the 5th spot in the rotation. Either Shawn Chacon or Sidney Ponson will have to go.
Pretty soon the Yanks will have Hideki Matsui and Robinson Cano back in the starting lineup, and reliever Octavio Dotel could be ready as well.
As for Gary Sheffield, his return is slated for September 1 at best. . .and the chances of the Yanks picking up his option for 2007 are slim or none. |

I nominate Ponson as the one to go. |

The aforementioned Crosby should be referred to as Bubba. Bobby Crosby is a shortstop who played for Oakland and may still do so.
Bing, Gary, Dennis, Philip and Lindsay Crosby have nothing to do with this.
Yanks today traded Chacon to Pittsurgh for outfielder-first baseman Craig Wilson.
And the Cubbies sent Greg Maddux to the Dodgers for infielder Cesar Itzuris. |

For the moment, at least, Ponson is still around. |
