I think I want to acquire a really good .22 mag for, well you know just because I think I want one. Other than maybe a 100 yd rabbit, it will probably be used for killing cans. I admit to knowing NOTHING about this gun and hope you will express your oppinion as to the caliber and also reccommend the rifle that you think might be best.

I bought my son one for his first gun. I chose a Ruger with the stainless steel barrel and the all weather stock. It's a great caliber for what you want to use it for, and Ruger makes it right. I have many Rugers in my safe and can honestly say they are the best for the money. Shooting birds, rabbits, squirrels, and cans will bring you many hours of fun with this gun.

I just picked up a Savage 93 in 22 mag. I have a 3-9 bushnell on it. I really like it and it shoots very well. 3/4" groups at 50yds with Winchester Supreme 34 gr JHP. I shot a few squrrils too and they did not even twitch. I am going out to look for sheds fri am and i will carry it for rabbits here in Maine. In the summer i shoot wood chucks an this is why i bought it.

Lets not forget the Marlin 25MN. I've had one for 4yrs. Got it at Wal-Mart with a Simmons 3-9*32 scope under $150. This guns killed most my game which runs from squirrels racoons and a few coyotes. The farthest kill on squirrel was 124yds. and a coyote at around 233yds. You won't go wrong with this little but big bore cartridge.

Bigbore,  what do you use for ammo in your 22 mag?    I have been using Rem, V- max and they shoot in the same hole @ 50yds.  I have shoot two chucks with it and they are K.I.A's  mfm

I think I can relate to wanting a .22 Mag just for the hell of it. Having said that, if tin cans and Rabbits are all you want it for, there are two things to consider. One is the cost of the ammo over the cost of .22LR for shooting tin cans. The other thing to consider is the destructive nature of shooting a Rabbit with a .22Mag. You'd better not make a body shot if you want any meat!

I own a Savage 93 wearing a Tasco Varmint scope. This little beast loves the 34Gr Winchester Supreme.

Have fun, and by the way, Marlin make some really beautifull .22Mags and their new T900 trigger is a big step up.
