Smoothies are a fast, delicious way to get a variety of fruit in your diet. They're also filling, so they make a substantial yet low-calorie high-fiber treat almost any time of day.

All these recipes are for 2-3 servings, and the directions for all of them are the same: Blend until smooth and serve.

  1. Breakfast Smoothie serves 2-3
    • 2 bananas
    • 8-ounce can crushed pineapple
    • 1/3 cup mango pieces
    • 2 cut peaches
    • 1 cup low-fat milk
  2. After-Workout Smoothie
    A slightly tart yet refreshing smoothie to enjoy after a workout.
    • 1 cup halved strawberries
    • 2 cut fresh apricots
    • 2 bananas
    • 6 ounces fresh raspberries
    • 1 cup low-fat milk
  3. Dessert Smoothie
    • 8-ounce can pineapple chunks
    • 2 bananas
    • 1 papaya
    • 1 cup milk
  4. Kid-Friendly Smoothie Kids love the purple color of this one.
    • 1 cup pineapple juice
    • 2 bananas
    • 6 ounces blackberries
  5. Cocktail Smoothie Enjoy this refreshing smoothie on a warm summer night.
    • 8-ounce can crushed pineapple
    • 1 papaya, seeded and diced
    • 1 banana
    • 1/2 cup pineapple juice
    • 1 tablespoon Coco Lopez coconut mixer

Making fruit smoothies is a wonderful way to enjoy warm-weather fruits -- they're great for breakfast, cooling off on a hot summer day or welcoming guests as they arrive for a barbecue. Similar in consistency to milk shakes, smoothies are quick, nutritious and amazingly rich at the same time. And kids love smoothies, so they are a perfect way to get them to eat fruit.

With such versatility, it's no wonder that the fruit smoothie has become one of the latest food crazes!

Madras Banana Smoothie
This smoothie can be served as is or with a splash of dark rum.
Serves two to three

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 1 cup cranberry/raspberry juice
  • 3 ripe bananas
  • 1 cup ice cubes

Combine juices and ice in a blender, and process until the ice is crushed. Add the bananas to the blender, and process until smooth. Pour into a glass and enjoy.

Strawberry Orange Smoothie
Serves two to three

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups tangerine or orange juice
  • 1 pint fresh strawberries, stems removed (reserve three berries with stems for garnish, sliced down the middle without cutting in half)
  • 1 cup ice

Combine orange juice and ice in a blender until the ice is crushed. Add the strawberries, and process until smooth. Pour into a glass and garnish with a single whole berry on the glass rim.

Raspberry Lemonade Smoothie
If used as a cocktail, consider adding a splash of vodka.
Serves two to three

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups lemonade
  • 1/2 pint fresh raspberries
  • 2 cups ice
  • Optional garnish: three slices or wedges of lemon

Combine ice and lemonade in a blender until the ice is crushed. Add raspberries, and process until smooth. Pour into a glass, and garnish with lemon slices or wedges.

Pineapple Kiwi Banana Smoothie
Serves two to three

  • 2 cups pineapple juice
  • 3 kiwis, peeled
  • 2 bananas
  • 2 cups ice
  • Optional garnish: one kiwi, cut into slices or wedges

In a blender, combine the juice and ice, and process until the ice is crushed. Add kiwis and bananas, and process until smooth. Pour into a glass, and garnish with either a slice or wedge of kiwi on the rim.
