Other Origins: None known.
Other Names: Booakers, Bottagers.
Element: Earth.
Appearance and Temperament: Bwbachs (Boo-box) are solitary house faeries who are very mischievous but do not seem to wish to harm their host families.
However, they do not have the helpful nature of the Scottish Brownie or the Irish Bean-Tighe.
They are small and round, and wear large red hats and little loincloths which look like diapers. Around their necks they wear animal-fur cloaks. They are always seen as males.
Time Most Active: All year.
Lore: These mischievous house faeries intend to protect their adopted home from outsiders, but have no ability to distinguish friend from foe.
One reportedly chased away a proselytizing preacher from a Welsh home. This protective instinct is for the dwelling itself and rarely for the family who lives there, so they will also chase away your friends and family.
The Bwbachs' pranks can be neutralized by ritually offering them food and by showing great respect for them.
The lore of the Bwbachs and their need for respectful leavings of food is recorded in the Welsh nursery rhyme:
Tommy Trevarrow, Tommy Trevarrow,
We will send bad luck tomorrow.
The old curmudgeon to eat all thy bread,
And not leave a piece for the Bwbach.
Where to Find Them: Look for them in homes in Faeryland, but do not invite them into your own home as they are more trouble than they are worth.
How to Contact: If you really want to meet a Bwbach, make a simple evocation and invite them to your circle. Use a bit of milk or cake as an added inducement.
Magickal and Ritual Help: They may possibly be able to help with home protection spells, but their changeable nature makes them very untrustworthy.
