Goddess Epona

(White Horse)

To wish on the White Horse for good luck, especially while travelling.

The horse is a powerful symbol in mythology, and a half-forgotten folk memory can end up 10,000 miles from its origins.

The horse, like the dragon, is a powerful symbol found in the earliest stages of Anglo-Saxon settlement in Britain.

In ancient times, horses weren't always so easy to come by. In Europe, they were considered 'prestige' animals.

They did the usual jobs of transportation, either directly or by pulling carts, you could use them well in warfare and the mark of wealth and rank showd in the possession of one of these fine animals.

The horse Goddess Epona was adopted by the Romans. Cavalry units stationed in Gaul adopted her as their Patron, taking Epona back to Rome and futher on to Spain, Romania, and Jugoslavia. Small images of Epona have been found all over Europe.

The German legions made plaques depicting her in human form feeding foals.

She is the only Celtic Goddess known to have been honored in Rome, where her name was sometimes styled as Epona Regina, and in the barracks of the Imperial Bodyguard was a shrine to Epona Augusta.

Carvings of massive horse symbols and images are found all over England.

Firstly there is the White Horse of Uffington, a beautifully designed horse near the village of Uffington, a place name derived from the Anglo-Saxon Uffa.

The shape and style of the horse is similar to other horse images found on Celtic artefacts in both Britain and ancient Belgium.

The Westbury Horse;

The Westbury geoglyph is a massive 55 metres long and 33 metres high, carved into the steeps hills of Bratton Down in Wiltshire.

The Red Horse of Tysoe;

Another vast carving in the English landscape, but this geoglyph unfortunately, unlike the Uffington and Westbury horses, has lost all physical shape and appearence to the naked eye.

The Red Horse was carved into the land near the town of Banbury and the village of Lower Tysoe.

The Red Horse has strong links to Tiw, the village of Tysoe itself is named in his honour.

So it's highly possible that the people who carved this, did so to honour Tiw.

Tiw seems to have been the original and oldest of the gods worshipped by the Germanic peoples, the Saxons knowing him by the name of Woden.

Perhaps the two were different deities with Woden gaining more popularity, but Tiw didn't disappear he became prominent as the war god.

His name remains with us in Tuesday.

The Romans called Tuesday dies Martis, after Mars, god of war.

When the Roman week gained ascendancy, the day of Mars became the day of Tiw, Tiwes-daeg.

Was the Red Horse of Tysoe carved so that their Sky Father could look down and see his own powerful symbol?
