Bubble, Bubble, Toil and Trouble By Hunters_Moon
Hello everyone. And how was your week? Mine was mired in the mundane of paperwork, paperwork and more paperwork. There are truly times I wonder why we need paperwork. And if I could cast a spell to banish all paperwork which in turn would save the trees which in turn would clean the air which in turn would? Ahhh, who am I kidding, paperwork is what makes the wheels turn or clog or cough or whatever the wheels of industry do.
Which brings me to the topic for tonight ?what is a spell? Is it the magical words of Abracadabra or Hocus Pocus or Shazam?
Is it the witch muttering 'eye of newt, tongue of dog, wing of bat and lip of frog' as she stirs a giant cauldron with a spoon?
Well, it could be none of these and it could be all of these?
Huh? Run that by me again.
Well, magic isn't in the words but in the speaker and whatever power the speaker imbues into the words is what makes the words magical and powerful. Make sense?
Who here has done a spell? Actually, I bet everyone in the world has done a spell at some time or another without actually realizing they're doing one. Remember 'Star light, Star bright, first star I see tonight'? Well, that is a simple form of a spell. How about blowing out the candles on your birthday cake or throwing a coin into a fountain? All of these are simple forms of a spell that everyone has done at some time or another.
Okay, so what is a spell? A spell is a mixture of specific words, emotional expression and mental projection or to put it simply a spell is kind of like a focused prayer that is 'acted out'. As Michele Morgan puts it, 'the magic circle is the stage, your magical tools are the props, and your will and intent are the range of emotion you employ to ensure an award-winning performance'.
When we pray, we express gratitude, inner thoughts, feelings and sometimes we ask for help or an answer or whatever. A spell is like that but more directed to a specific goal. Once we have determined an intention, we use a spell that incorporates words, music, oils, herbs, candles, etc. to manifest that intention in reality.
Spells are best written out, considering the words and phrasing with the utmost care. Just like the phrase says 'be careful what you wish for, you just might get it'. So it goes with spells. You have to really pay attention to how you place your words because the universe is truly listening to what you are saying and you want the universe to hear exactly what your intention is rather than think it has heard what your intention is. At the very least, a poorly planned spell with just fizzle out but at its worst, it can blow up in your face.
For example, you cast a spell for money without specifically telling the universe how the money is to come or for what purpose. Well, that doesn't sound so bad until you consider different avenues as to how it can manifest. What if it manifests as an inheritance because someone you love dies or comes in the form of an insurance settlement that indeed gives you all the money you asked for and then some unfortunately the accident that started this settlement also left you paralyzed? Hmmm, 'be careful what you wish for indeed'. Or what if you ask for money 'to pay all the bills' with the result being you inundated with old debts that suddenly surface demanding payment plus interest?
Spells should be assembled with as much detail as possible ?simply casting a spell for the 'perfect' relationship is not specific enough because what is the relationship perfect for? Perfect for teaching you everything you don't want in a relationship. You can still ask for the perfect relationship but add to the request with something like 'the perfect relationship with a man/woman who is healthy in mind, body, and spirit' along with 'kind and generous', and the all important 'single and available'.
As the inspirational writer and minister Catherine Ponder says 'Get definite about your desires so they can get definite about you!'
Some people like their spells to rhyme and indeed many spells do rhyme, but do they have to rhyme to work? The answer is no. Many spells rhyme because they are easy to remember when they rhyme and magic needs to flow so you need to be able to remember your spell rather than read it. Nothing breaks my rhythm more so than being half way through and then having to go read up a section I completely forgot and have difficulty reading by the light of a candle. I can feel the energy build and build and build and then…it goes flat as I flip through my BOS trying to look up the spot where I lost my place. So, rhyming is a good way to remember. I have also heard of spells put to music, or drum beats, or dance to add to the dimension of the spell as well as the ease of remembering. But if you don't want to, you don't have to ?whatever works for you because like I said earlier the words only have the power that you give them so YOU are the only ingredient needed to make any spell work, the rest are just props for atmosphere and sensory symbols that trigger the underlying intention of the spell in your subconscious.
The body of your spell should have your statement of intent. This is the main thrust of your spell where you are very specific and focused as to what you want and how you want to get it. Let's say you are looking for the care of dreams you could say something like?BR> "Oh Gracious Lady, O Mighty Lord, know my need and hear my prayer. I ask for your assistance in finding and purchasing the perfect car for me or something better. This car will be of the highest quality, in excellent working order, and is offered to me at the perfect price. This car comes to me quickly, easily and in peace, and I am completely satisfied and happy with the outcome."
I generally toss 'or something better' into all my spells as the Lord and Lady are always more savvy about everything and I want to avoid limiting the form of my desire. 'Or something better' allows that limitation to be removed and frees the universal powers extend their power to the fullest. Be willing to turn the outcome of the spell over to the Lord and the Lady so you can open for the very best.
You can add timelines like "I ask this to come forth to me within the next three weeks, months, etc." and if you perform the spell during an Esbat then it is customary to ask for fulfillment by the time the moon comes full again. Still, you want to be flexible and throw in "Divine timing for the good of all concerned."
If money is a problem with respect to this then you might want to change part of it to say something like "I ask for your assistance in drawing to me the perfect car, which manifests for me now in Divine ways". Leave out the 'perfect price' to leave the door open for this car to come to you as a gift (I can dream can't I?), a prize, etc. Or you can add "I have more than enough money for this purchase, and the money comes to me quickly, easily, and in peace, through the rich avenues of Divine substance" and allows the money to gifted or for a wonderful windfall or lottery prize or whatever.
There are also some all purpose statements that I learned from Michele Morgan's book Simple Wicca. I keep them handy to throw in to help cover all the bases when I feel I need them. You can choose some or when in doubt, use them all.
"I ask the universe to lend the power of the planets in their orbits, the stars in their courses, the angels, and the elements of earth, air, fire, and water, all to blend in perfect order and harmony to obtain my desire."
This works great if your days, or astrological signs, or whatever aren't corresponding.
"Anything I may have overlooked in this spell will be taken care of for me with perfect, Divine results, in the Lord and the Lady's own perfect way."
Just in case I've forgotten something, this covers my butt.
"This or something better now comes forth for me, in perfect timing, for the highest good of all concerned."
This is important as it allows the universe to know you are open and flexible. The universe sees your life on a grander scale and as earth bound beings our sight is limited by nature.
And a wrap up statement.
"I give thanks for the prefect, Divine results now! So Mote it Be!"
I also add another phrase that I find beneficial.
"In no way will this spell reverse, or place upon me any curse. In the name of the Goddess, and of the God, I proclaim this spell complete. So Mote it be!"
Spells can be as simple or as complicated as you deem necessary. My preference is simple. Simple doesn't make a spell any less potent, just like complicated doesn't make a spell any more powerful. It is simply a matter of preference. What makes a spell potent and powerful is YOU based on your focus, intention, level of desire, etc.
The words, the props, etc. are all simply to enhance your ability to direct the energy and manifest intention.
I'm sure everyone has heard about the knot spell. This is a good manifestation spell and while simple it packs a powerful punch. All you need for this spell is a piece of paper with your statement of intent, and a length of cord. Read your statement and then actually take some time to visualize the result. See the result as reality not as something that may or may not happen, but as something that will happen, is happening. Roll up the paper and wrap the cord around the paper. Tie nine knots in accordance with the following rhyme:
"By knot of one, the spell's begun. By knot of two, it cometh true. By knot of three, So Mote it Be. By knot of four, tis 'strengthened more. By knot of five, this spell's alive. By knot of six, this spell I fix. By knot of seven, the Powers in Heaven. By knot of eight, 'tis sealed with fate. By knot of nine, this spell's divine. By the Goddess' hand, this thing is mine!"
Set the scroll with the cord onto your altar and raise and release the energy saying the "In no way shall this spell reverse? Then just take the cord and paper and put it somewhere safe until the spell manifests. Once it does, burn the scroll in the cauldron while you thank the Lord and the Lady.
Another simple spell that I actually had incorporated into a birthday craft for my daughter was that we decorated a clay pot and then filled it with soil before planting some seeds. On a little piece of paper I wrote:
"Little seed that I found Little seed in the ground I wish I may, I wish right now To have this wish I wish out loud."
It's a simple rhyme, but it delighted my daughter and their friends. They were instructed to say the rhyme each time they watered the plant and focus on their wish each and every time. With the idea that as the plant sprouted and grew, so their wish would sprout and grow.
So, that's some of the basics when it comes to designing your own spells and have no doubt that your own spells can be just as powerful ?if not more so ?for you simply because you wrote and designed them yourself.
So, I thought for this week a good project would be to design a spell this week. Decide on a goal or intention, and then I want you to write out a spell for that and list any supplies you feel are necessary. Next week, we'll review any and all spells that you've created along with a discussion before proceeding onto the next craft class' topic.
Well, that's it for tonight. I hope you enjoyed it. If you need to contact me, you can reach me at hunters_moon12 @yahoo.ca. Otherwise, we will see you at the next class.
