It appears likely that Obama will win. Originally, the power of the president was very limited but as time went by, each president pushed the envelope and each congress cowtowed to it so todays presidents are vastly more powerful than George Washington or the men that followed him for the next 100+ years. So what are Obamas plans for us? Using his campaign website, lets have a look. Let's begin with his ideas about service. Barack Obama will enable all Americans to serve: Obama and Biden will expand AmeriCorps and the Peace Corps, engage retiring Americans, and set up an America's Voice Initiative to send Americans who are fluent speakers of local languages to expand our public diplomacy. Integrate service into learning: Obama and Biden will set a goal that all middle and high school students do 50 hours of community service a year, and will establish a new tax credit that is worth $4,000 a year in exchange for 100 hours of public service a year. Invest in the nonprofit sector: Obama and Biden will create a Social Investment Fund Network to use federal seed money to leverage private sector funding. They will create an agency dedicated to building the capacity and effectiveness of the nonprofit sector. A more detailed description of this stuff is available here; http://www.barackobama.com/issues/service/#enable-americans At first glance, this stuff is alarming to me. At second glance, it doesn't get any better. But perhaps I'm merely a surly old curmudgeon lacking in altruism and overly cynical. |

How old does a person have to be to be not young? Well,.... I'm 64 but, as long as my pecker can rise to the (occasional) occasion, I'm not going to think of myself as old! |

as long as my pecker can rise to the (occasional) occasion, I'm not going to think of myself as old! I'm glad there is a "standard". Next I was going to ask about being too short, but we can discuss that in another thread.... |
