Hi.
For anyone who remembers that back in August I was wondering how to care for my poor l'il black Brahma chick...well we must have done something right because he is now a great BIG bird, in there with all the others.
We have had much better luck with hatchlings since then, too, and now actually have 16 chicks between 4 and 6 weeks old, in addition to our original (6) birds.
NOW my question is -- is there any way to determine the gender of chickens?  Believe it or not, the man from whom we originally purchased our Brahmas claimed you threw them to the ground and the ones who screamed hysterically were females!!!  Chicken novice that I am, that still struck me as a ridiculous transference of his sexist outlook on to birds...not to mention that 3 or the four females he sold us by that system turned out to be males.
Does anyone here know of anything a bit more reasonable and trustworthy?  Obviously, I'd like to keep the females and distribute or sell the males while they are still young.
Happy Holidays to all!
Amy
