  1. Get a friend to pick up a chicken. This is best done when the animals are docile.
  2. Put a small amount of petroleum jelly on the comb (flap on the head) of the chicken.
  3. Gently rub the jelly around the comb, making sure it is completely covered.
  4. Place the chicken back into its hutch, close the door and walk away.
  5. This will have insulated the bird's comb and will prevent it suffering from frostbite.
