- Get a friend to pick up a chicken. This is best done when the animals are docile.
- Put a small amount of petroleum jelly on the comb (flap on the head) of the chicken.
- Gently rub the jelly around the comb, making sure it is completely covered.
- Place the chicken back into its hutch, close the door and walk away.
- This will have insulated the bird's comb and will prevent it suffering from frostbite.
