California White Leghorn By: Wendy
The California White is a sex link hybrid of the California Gray Leghorn. The Gray variety was developed in 1940 by Professor James Dryden with the result being a dual purpose bird. Both colors of Californian are popular in the Midwestern parts of the U.S. and Canada.
Contrary to most other dual purpose breeds which lay brown eggs, the Californian lays a large white egg of excellent shell and interior quality. They are known for their extended laying period as well. Californians are considered docile in nature, unlike other strains of leghorn which can be flighty.
The whites sometimes have a few black feathers in their plumage. Chicks are yellow with black flecks. Many hatcheries also sell ready-to-lay pullets of this breed.
They are a vigorous breed, with a high percentage of liveability in chicks. This vigor also contributes to their tolerance of cold weather and results in their being an excellent winter layer.
The body type is considered heavy in the world of white egg-producing, commercial breeds. The weight for a mature hen is 4.5 lbs; cockerels 5-1/2. Excess young males make excellent fryers.
