The first colours recorded are the speckled and spangled. They can be also be found in buff, white, silver, brown 'light' and red. The Sussex was present at the first poultry show in the 1840's and was considered for market purposes. Description - The Sussex is a docile breed. It has a single comb, red ear lobes and white legs. It is a solid bird and considered a good egg layer; which are cream to light brown in colour. For show purposes the colouring of the speckled Sussex should be a mahogany with small black then white spots on the end of each feather. They are seen frequently in a paler colour due to the fact that the birds moult whiter each year. The light Sussex, although white in appearance, is considered a silver one. The white Sussex, however, is white not silver. The buff is described as being ginger in colour. In the UK, the Sussex is very often described as a 'proper looking chicken.'
