As soon as they lay they will breed. I guess even before since the drakes always seem to mature first. I have found that they will lay a cluch of eggs between 9 and 13 then go broody. They may even lay a whole nest full and never sit on that nest. I have a nest box with almost 30 eggs in it. I decided to pull them and throw them in the incubator instead of waiting for the girl to sit. I have one who has decided to set and she has 12 under her. I also have three bantam hen each with five duck eggs under them. I am hoping for many many TO MANY ducks. As for being a good mom I had a first time mom this season get off of the nest when the eggs were pipped. She decided to leave it foe good. I finished them in the incubator and they did great. Good luck Goldy_ |

It also depends on the breed of duck. Most domestic ducks will not lay on their eggs. Muscoveys usually do and make good parents but Khaki Campbell and Blue Swede ducks just ignore the eggs. You can always use an incubator to hatch the eggs if your ducks refuse to nest. Wild ducks are much more nurturing and will always nest. PS: I could not see the pic of your babies...just a red X. Cound you repost when you get a chance. Thanks, MIchelle |

I have a similar pool for my ducks. Your ducks definitely look like mallards so the female should be a good nester and mommy. Keep us posted. |

Thank you for your help...we got Daisy and Donald from a 'feed store' and we were told that they were Peking ducks but as you can tell from the pic...yes they are Mallards and I will keep you posted on their "love life" |

Yes these are flying Mallards. I raise this breed and they do very well for me as for hatching their own. It may take a clutch or two of eggs to be layed but she will set. I find their nest all over the place :) Goldy_ |

I am so jealous Goldy. I would love to raise some more mallards but no one wants to make their nest at my house. I wished I lived closer to you so I could have a few babies. Enjoy them for me. Michelle |

I just brought a pair over to my boss's pond today. Since they are hatchery raised they do not fly off for the winter. They stay home :) I will just have to post more pictures for you then :) Goldy_ |

How are Daisy and Donald doing? Did they turn out to be mallards like we thought? Hugs, Michelle |
