I have a question I hope someone can help me with .  it may be a little gross , but...I have an older hen that had/has a soft squishy lump on her breast (I believe that is where her craw is ).my hubby picked her up out of the rain  today  to put her in the hen house and  he was feeling it and  food started coming out of her mouth, so he squeezed it a little more and alot of food came out .
Tonight when we went  to put everyone in for the night I picked her up  and put a little pressure on her breast and this  horrible smelling liquid started coming out with some food. Does anyone know what causes this and what to do about it ..
Thanks
 Phyllis

Check out this site Phyllis...it sounds like she has a blockage in her crop, at least I hope that is all it is.  Soft massage should ease the food down.  Let me know if this sounds like what it is and also keep me posted as to how the hen is doing.   Michelle

Photobucket

Here is a picture of a chicken's anatomy.  I think the crop is where the fleshy area is from what you are saying.

She has an impacted crop. You can squeeze it out of work it down. Some peeps suggest yogart. The enzymes eat away at the crud? I would suggest working it down or up with flushing warm water.

Thanks for the info, I squeezed out what I could  tonight and she seemed more alert,  so I'll see if I get anything out tomorrow and get some yogart and see if I can get it down  her .  I hope she makes it thru the night . I will keep you posted ....
