I may not do alot of posting, but I check in everyday to read the posts.  By the way, it's for my mallard, Skippy.

She flew away yesterday and was missing for about 2 hours.  Joe and I were devasted.  She's become so attached to us and we to her.   I went to all my neighbors to ask them to check their yards.  There was a massive search on our block.

Then a miracle...Joe looked out our side window and shouted "Hurry up! She's in the middle of the street coming back!"  I ran out the door and greeted her and she started to bob her head up and down, cackling away.  I think she was happy to see a familiar face.  She walked all the way to the fence entrance, into the yard and into her pen and started to swim in her pool.  I cried with relief to see her again.  I thought she was a gonner.

I wasn't going to clip her wings cause I thought it wouldn't be fair since she's wild.  But with hunting season soon approaching and my heart was so broken missing her, I decided to keep her.  Joe and I keep her well and she seems to happy in our yard.

Anyway, that's why I'm asking for help.

Thanks for listening.
Thanks

Alicia

Stop Your Chickens Flying Away
To prevent your chickens from flying away and exploring the neighbourhood when you let them out, you should do some wing clipping. This involves trimming the primary feathers on one wing, in order to make take-off an unbalanced affair.

Only trim the primary feathers as the others provide necessary insulation. To see how far back you can trim the feathers without hurting the chicken, hold the feathers up to the light and you will see where the bloodvessels start in the shafts of the feathers. As a rule, no further than 6cm of feather should be removed. Be sure to clip the wings again each time the chicken moults!

This applies to ducks also.  Remember to leave the two outermost feathers intact.  These are the longest feathers on the bird and will not make the bird look so awkward/strange.
