We started the new year (2003) with 2 wild mallard hens. One was the mother hen from 2 springs ago and the other was her baby from last year. The only one after a critter took care of the other nine. Well one day this spring a fast flying and smooth talking mallard drake took my oldest mallard hen on a date. He told her about the bright lights of the big city and all the fast times they could have together. Her eyes glazed over and that was the last we have seen her.....the little tramp! So all we had left was the offspring and never have we seen a better wild mallard hen than Baby Duck. Then she flew away. Oh NO! Yet every evening she would fly back and get her fill of duck feed and take a quick bath and then back across the road to spend the night. The this past weekend my daughter Michelle looked out the window and here comings Baby Duck walking across the yard with 13 little babys all in a line coming back home. Yep she crossed the road (55 mph speed limit) and took her babies back to where she was hatched last year. She now hides them in the hay field. I have food and a place for the little ones to swim outside the chicken yard. Life goes on here on Pine Grove Road. Hope you and yours are doing as well as we are. Warm Regards, Gary |

How cute that must have been to watch! Nothing cuter than Mama Duck leading her babies all in a row! It is surprising they did not get hit, but one nice thing is that a lot of people when they see a wild Mallard with babies, will stop to let them cross in front of them. At least, they do on the road in front of our house. Its got a 45 mph speed limit on it, but it is a dirt road and not a highway! You will have to get some pictures, if possible, and post them for all of us Duck Lovers!!! Janice |
