I have just acquired 4 Pekin ducklings and I was just wondering how long it takes until they start laying or servicing the females?

Hello Clayde8 - I'm not sure who has Pekins on the Gab, I know Sherri used to.  I don't so I can't help you there and it's been a year since I last had female ducks.

From what I've read, they're not a broody breed and so don't sit on eggs, so if you're hoping to hatch some eggs you may need to look into incubators.  Tami, Mom - do either of you know anything about Pekins?  In the meantime, have you checked out Feathersite?  It's a great source of information on all thngs poultry.

Here's Live Ducks - another good site.  Can anyone suggest some more?

Hi De,

I have Pekins. Just to let you know, make sure you have the right ratio of male to females.  The standard rule is 6 hens to 1 gander.  The males can be brutal.  I've lost several females due to my very aggressive male.  Because of this, I don't let him free roam with the girls anymore.  He free roams along with my male Indian Runner and the geese.

Chickenwings is correct.  Pekins don't brood very well.  Although my girls get alittle broody, nothing comes of it.  Eventually, I have to take the eggs away.  I've been told by various people, that this is because the maternal instinct has been practically bred out of them since they're mostly bred for meat.

I got/rescued my Pekins from a Duck Farm here on Long Island that soley breeds them for meat for the swanky restaurants in NYC.  However, they were kind enough to sell me a few here and there as pets for a very small fee.

They're alot of work but loads of  fun, too.  They can be so funny at times.

I hope this answers your question.  Try the websites, Chickenwings suggested.  They're pretty good, too.

Take care and good luck
Alicia

Thanks heaps for the info and the sites, it has all been very helpful.
As yet I am not sure what sexes I have. I did the quack test but I am still waiting to see and other female traits but as soo as I know I will split them as you have suggested.
They are amazing to watch, my husband and I go outside very evening and watch them for hours.
thank again
De
