I was at my local Pet shop yesturday and the subject of ducks came up.
I asked her if she got any Muscovy ducks in the shop and she told me that the Muscovy wasn't a duck, it was actually in the goose family.
Now I have never heard of it as a goose, I know it isn't related to the Mallard but that doesn't make it a goose.
Can someone answer this question because it has been popping up in my head.
Muscovy Duck or Muscovy Goose?
Deanna

Hi Deanna,

Muscovies are definitely ducks.  I had a Muscovy male but I had to give him away.  He was fine in the beginning with my Pekins and then he started getting very aggressive.  He would chase the females endlessly and beat up my male Pekin.

Muscovies can be very aggressive.  Especially during mating season.  So be careful.

Other than that they can be such gentle creatures and beautiful to look at.

Take care,
Alicia

The muscovy is a very different duck, as it's not derived from the mallard as all other ducks are.  This means that, while the muscovy will often happily mate with other ducks, their offspring will be infertile.  You can easily see traces of differences in the muscvoy - for instance, the vocal differences.  They have a whispering voice.  Also, the length of incubation is much closer to that of a goose egg.

So as you can see from many different sites...  Muscovies are ducks, but just different.

Hi Riiy, thank you so much for posting this information about muscoveys.  We have lots of muscoveys in Virginia Beach.  They are very devoted to their babies and make good parents.   They are definitely classified as ducks.

So nice to see you posting Riiy...take care Michelle
