In the process of doing Spring events, my husband and I ran across a lady that raises Pied peacocks; we are seriously thinking about getting a pair for when we move into the new place.  Any information about general care, feeding etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Nefer,
Honey I raise my peacocks ...just like I do the rest of my birds. Some folks say they have to be this and that...But I have raised them with the rest of my babies for years with great success and hatch rate.. I do watch them in the spring to see if they need wormed...I feed mine scratch and then the game bird feed for laying season..then I feed them veggies adn things that I can get..they also love the treats and stuff that the chickens do...If you get them as babies they will be fairly tame... If you get them as adults..I would suggest clipping their wings or keeping them inclosed until they become used to you cause they can fly and fly a good ways quick..I have a book with some more info...I'llhave to hunt it cause I have not used it in quite sometime...I'll look for it and see if I can come up with better info for you
Keep us posted about if you get them or not... and I'll try to help you with them all I can... I'll holler back when I find the book... Hopefully, some of the others will have some suggestions...too...
Good to see you dear..I had just posted a message to you in your UPDATE thread....was thinking about you today...
Huggs
Mama
Ps I hope I have helped some...

Well I was talking to Phyl on IM Sunday when I heard a bad racket and looked outside and there was my young tom chasing and beating up my only peacock roo that I had left ! I did not think it was too bad since they have had little tifts before when warm weather sets in.. But when I got out there and calmed the Tom and got a bit of a closer look at the peacock his head was bleeding.. It scared me really bad..So I caught the Tom and caged him and managed to get the peacock in the corner and simply pick him up ! He was worn totally out from running away from tom. Well it is bad.. He head is pecked something feirce and his head was already beginning to swell and as everyone well knows when swelling starts in a fowls head, chances are fluid is going into their lungs.. Or at least that has been my experiance...Everytime a goose or bird has gotten their heads in the fence and I've taken them to the VET this is what they have told me..
Guss was at work so I had to work the best I could with him. I made a large bowl of warm soapy water, with a antibacterial soap. Got him to lie down and sat a straddle of him.. as long as I was hovering over him he would sit still for me. I was his head to remove any dirt particles, and get all the blood off so I could see what I was dealing with.. The abrasions are not deep but wide spread all over the top of his head, and down his neck.. I can't see were he was pecked in the eye but I suspect he has been since there is a bit extra swelling around it.  His eyes looked good, and alert..He was not in shock yet. After bathing the head and neck I used peroixde and boiled and boiled his head out.. I just  covered his face with a dry wash clothe and poured it over that way it would not get into his eyes. We are talking that major flooding of the area... and then I rinsed all of that off with warm clean water and towel dried the area. Fearing dirt particles and stuff getting into the wounds I got some guaze pads and paper tape, applied neosporin to the area, and then bandaged his whole head leaving the eyes exposed.. I was very careful to NOT bandage it to tightly as to cut of the wind to his windpipe..Since peacocks have such a long thin neck...
We then realeased him into a pen were he was alone, and could roost .. OK
Yesterday he did not get off the roost..I went and bought more stuff to doctor him with. When I went out to get him, he had come off the roost but he was not doing much..When I picked him up I saw why. His one eye was swollen totally shut and seeping bad. He seems to have a slight fever. We brought him in and I cut the bandages off.. Very carefully..Mind you I have to say he was extremely good for me. As long as we move slowly and dont jerk or something he remains calm and allows me to care for him. I went through the same routine of washing and cleaning the area, but the eye is what is concerning me. I took some warm salty water to it, and managed to remove a solid sort of covering that I thought was infection but it was almost a scab..I know this sounds terrible but I don't understand it not being runny.. How did it form into something that had to be removed.. Once this came from the eye it did seep some more. I also put panalog into his eye..Now this did not go good with him..he wiped at his eye and got upset about it..I'm thinking it burned or something but I'm not really sure about this point at all.. I need suggestions on this.. I'm not sure how to proceed with this one. I re banadaged him gave him some infant tylenol for the slight temp. And put him in the cotton trailor again.. I put fresh food and water out for him and believe it or not, he went to eating right away.. I did not notice him drinking I had tried to get him to drink in the house but peacocks just are not like chickens and easily persuaded to do things. It's a bit too early to see about him this morning, but I dont know which direction to go with this when I can see to him.. I'm concerned he may be blinded in that one eye, and I also don't know if my efforts are enough.? If he is eating and drinking do you think it's safe to NOT carry him to the Vet and continue to doctor him myself. I did not hear any sort of gurgling or rasping when working with him, so I feel confident that he has not got a bad fluid build up in his lungs or i would have taken him for a shot right away. Do you think I'm doing enough? What are your thoughts here gang? This is the last peacock roo that I have plus after losing Igor I can't stand another one to go down. Thanks for listening y'all..I know this is probally way to legnthy and boring..Just had to ask for some help or at least see if you thought I was caring for him properly... Blessing's y'all and I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this.. Mama

Tami, I just knew something was wrong when you didn't come back! Seems you've done about all you can do which is a great job. I do wonder if he's not looking alot better today if he might need an antibiobic of some sort, is there something you can give him without carting him to the vet and upsetting him more? I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he'll be doing better, that and a prayer.

Thanks y'all....
Phyl... I was going to get him some terrmicyan yesterday but they are out of it..I asked when theywere going to get some and he said he would find out and let me know.. but you know how that is.. I checked him and his eyes look bright the one is goopy looking but I don't think quite as bad as yesterday..I can't believe that he is still on the roost..I dont know if it's depression or what to tell you the truth... I dont know he still has me worried..it's not like him to stay in bed.. Perhaps he is lonely but I'm scared to put him with others yet..You know how birds are with pecking at others when they have a sore or something.. I just guessI  will watch him for a while longers.. Mama

Hi Tami, sorry to hear about your peacock.  How is he doing today?  I hope he makes a full recovery soon.  I know how upsetting that must have been for you.  Michelle
